WORKPLACE TIP: Can everyone find your first aid kit?

If someone was injured at work today, would your team know exactly where to find the first aid kit—or would they lose valuable time searching cupboards and asking around?

Having a kit is only part of being prepared. Staff also need to know where it is, how to access it and who to contact for help.

✅ Make it easy to find
Use clear first aid signage and show every new employee the kit’s location during induction. Include casual staff, contractors and anyone working outside normal hours.

✅ Keep access clear
Avoid placing the kit behind stored equipment, in a cluttered cupboard or somewhere staff cannot readily access. Let everyone know if its location changes.

✅ Check what’s inside
Assign someone to check the kit regularly and after use. Replace used supplies, check expiry dates and make sure packaging is intact. A kit that looks full may still be missing essential items.

✅ Match it to your workplace
An office, mechanical workshop, construction site and mobile work crew can have different first aid needs. Consider your workplace hazards, staff numbers, separate work areas and how quickly emergency help could reach you.

✅ Know your first aiders
Make sure staff know who your trained first aiders are and how to contact them. Think about coverage during leave, different shifts and offsite work.

✅ Practise your emergency response
Your team should know the workplace address, how to call 000, where an ambulance can enter and where the AED is located if one is available. Never assume everyone already knows.

Try this at your next team meeting: Ask, “Where is our first aid kit, and who would you call for help?” Their answers may reveal a gap you can fix immediately.

A well-stocked kit matters. So does having people who can confidently respond.

Shield Education comes to you, delivering onsite First Aid and CPR training for workplace groups across Ipswich, Brisbane and Logan. Online pre-course learning is followed by a practical session at your workplace, helping your team build skills together.

WORKPLACE TIP: Train before an emergency

Would your team know what to do if a colleague collapsed, a customer was injured or someone suddenly became seriously unwell?

Having a first aid kit is essential, but having people who know how to respond is just as important. First aid and CPR training helps staff develop the knowledge, practical skills and confidence to act while professional help is on the way.

Why does workplace training matter?

✅ Recognising when help is needed
Training helps workers recognise an emergency, assess the situation and understand when to call Triple Zero (000).

✅ Building practical skills
Hands-on practice gives your team an opportunity to learn CPR, use an automated external defibrillator (AED) and respond to common injuries and medical emergencies.

✅ Helping staff respond calmly
Practising in a supportive environment helps people understand their role, communicate clearly and work together when a situation is stressful.

✅ Preparing for everyday workplace risks
Cuts, burns, falls and sudden illness can happen in offices, workshops, construction sites and community settings. Training helps your team prepare for situations they may encounter at work.

✅ Keeping knowledge fresh
Skills can fade when they are rarely used. Regular refresher training gives staff the opportunity to practise, ask questions and strengthen their confidence.

Make first aid part of your workplace culture.
Ensure staff know who your first aiders are, where the first aid kit and AED are located, and how to access emergency assistance. Review these arrangements when staff, work activities or locations change.

TRAINER TIP | Document It While It’s Fresh

A strong assessment decision needs strong evidence behind it — and that includes clear, accurate and timely documentation.

When you’ve just finished observing a student, the details are fresh. You can remember what they demonstrated, how they performed the task, where prompting was required, what feedback was provided and whether the evidence met the assessment requirements.

Leave those records until later and important details can easily be lost.

Good trainer and assessor practice means:

• Complete assessment documentation as close to the assessment as practical.
• Record what you actually observed, rather than relying on memory later.
• Make notes that are specific, factual and relevant to the assessment criteria.
• Clearly document any additional questioning, prompting, reassessment or reasonable adjustment where applicable.
• Make sure the assessment outcome is supported by sufficient evidence and your records are complete and legible.

Good documentation isn’t just administration. It helps protect the integrity of the assessment process, supports consistent decision-making and provides a clear record of how competency was determined.

The assessment might only take an hour — but the evidence needs to stand up long after the class is finished.

TRAINER TIP | Engage. Support. Encourage. Build Skills.

Great training is about more than delivering information. It’s about creating an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, confident having a go, and supported while they develop new skills.

As trainers, we can improve engagement by:

• Engaging students through discussion, demonstrations and practical activities.
• Supporting different learning needs and giving students time to understand and practise.
• Encouraging questions and treating mistakes as part of the learning process.
• Building skills by connecting theory to realistic situations students may actually encounter.

A student who feels involved in their training is far more likely to understand the content, retain what they’ve learned and confidently apply their skills when it matters.

At Shield Education, our focus is not simply on completing a course — it’s on helping students leave training feeling capable, confident and ready to use what they’ve learned.

Good trainers deliver content. Great trainers create learning.

STUDENT TIP: Be prepared, learn with confidence.

A little preparation can make a big difference to your training experience.

Before your course, take a few minutes to complete your pre-learning, read your course information and come ready to ask questions. You don’t need to know everything before you arrive — that’s what training is for.

At Shield Education, our goal is to help you understand the skills, practise them and leave feeling confident in what you’ve learned.

Come prepared. Ask questions. Get involved. Build confidence.

TRAINER TIP: WATCH THE QUIET LEARNERS

Not every learner who is struggling will put their hand up and ask for help.

Some learners will stay quiet because they’re unsure, embarrassed, lacking confidence, or simply don’t want to draw attention to themselves. Others may nod along with the group even when they haven’t fully understood the information.

As a trainer, look beyond who is answering the questions.

Pay attention to learners who:
• Rarely contribute to discussions
• Consistently wait for others to answer first
• Look hesitant when instructions are given
• Watch other learners before beginning a task
• Appear confident in a group but struggle when working independently

Instead of singling someone out with “Do you understand?”, try checking in naturally:

“Talk me through what you’re going to do first.”

This gives the learner an opportunity to demonstrate their understanding without making them feel like they’re being tested in front of everyone.

A strong trainer doesn’t measure engagement by who talks the most.

Sometimes the learner who needs you most is the one saying the least.
