BOWIE
7-year-old | Clyde x QH | Gelding
Approx. 16hh | CCSHA Registered (Sunshine n Whiskey | also registered with CCSHA & Dilutes Australia)
Bowie is a beautiful, big buckskin gelding with plenty of presence and three lovely paces, particularly an eye-catching trot and canter. He is very much a “more woah than go” type and generally prefers a quieter, steadier way of going.
He was started later at around 5 to allow his body time to mature and has since had plenty of professional training and regular coaching. He is a very sweet, quiet and easy-going horse with a cheeky but loveable personality. Bowie absolutely adores people and will always meet you at the gate, often lowering his head to help you halter him.
He does not require lunging and is very much a pull-out-of-the-paddock-and-go type. After time off he is more likely to be lazy or distracted rather than hot.
Bowie has achieved scores of around 70% in dressage tests, including 68% in Prelim 1.2 and 69% in Novice 2.2, showing that he is more than capable on the flat. While he performs the movements well, dressage isn’t necessarily his favourite job — he would much rather enjoy a varied lifestyle where he isn’t asked to be overly forward or switched on all the time.
He has had a great variety of exposure, including:
• Dressage competitions
• Jumping (including early under saddle and free jumping, which he enjoys)
• Road riding
• Group trail rides
• Trail riding
• Working equitation exposure
• General outings and exposure
Bowie is particularly enjoyable out in company and has completed plenty of group trail rides, including riding along roads. When ridden out alone, he can occasionally be a little looky and may stop if unsure, but generally just needs a confident rider to encourage him forward. He is naturally more forward outside the arena and enjoys trail riding, where he is steady, safe, and rarely spooks. He is happy following or leading once confident.
He is generally very easy to handle and is great for the farrier, vet and dentist.
Things to know (full transparency):
• Repetitive arena work isn’t really his thing. If worked in the arena too regularly he can become behind the leg and may evade the work by stopping or not wanting to go forward, or falling in/out through the shoulder. A confident rider with clear, consistent aids can work him through this safely and it has never escalated into anything dangerous.
• He can be slightly pushy on the ground at times, but is nothing for an experienced handler.
• He can be nervous loading if he hasn’t floated in a while, and if overwhelmed may step backwards. However, after one professional float training lesson he now loads and unloads independently and has made excellent progress. Once loaded he travels well. With regular practice and/or an experienced handler he continues to improve.
• He has some cosmetic scarring on the front of both hocks from a fence accident when young. This has been vet checked and does not affect his soundness.
•On very rare occasions he can put in a small half-hearted lead that feels like a hump transitioning into canter.
Ideal home & rider:
I think Bowie would suit an experienced horsey family or confident rider wanting a safe, genuine all-rounder. His ideal life is variety — trail riding, lessons, some jumping, working equitation, and general farm riding.
Rider-wise, I would say confident novice (w/t/c) with regular instruction or experienced support upwards. He benefits from a rider with clear, consistent aids who can confidently follow through when needed, as he can become dull to the leg if not ridden clearly.
With more exposure, I could genuinely see him developing into a really lovely, safe husband-type horse — the kind you can pull out of the paddock and go trail riding on. I would not sell him to a complete beginner to independently ride or manage, or to a purely dressage-focused home.
The reason for sale is simply that our preferred jobs don’t quite align. Owner loves dressage and want to focus on that, Bowie is happiest with variety.
Lots of videos available including dressage tests, trail riding, and float loading, as well as test sheets.
