Happy Australia Flag Day. Today, September 3rd, is the 125th anniversary of the Australian Flag. Grade 4 listened, learned and reflected on the Australian Flag and wrote about what we love about Australia. We love our bush, beaches, koalas and of course a snag on the barbie

This term our Grade 2-3 students are learning all about the World and how kids in other parts of the world live. Our class have been engaged with learning about the different continents, countries and landmarks.
This week our focus has been on Europe. Today our class were lucky enough to see a little presentation from both Frankie and Clark sharing their family heritage. Frankie shared the Irish flag, some sports shirts and showed us a Hurling stick and ball. He gave us a demonstration of this. He has also been teaching some students how to play Gaelic Football. We explored the town his family is from in Ireland using Google Maps and we were spoilt with Irish crisps to eat.
After the presentation about Ireland, Clark shared London. He shared some photos of places he has been including The London Eye, Elizabeth Tower with Big Ben and Buckingham Palace. Clark also had little wooden toys of the landmarks of London. We got to see the house that Clark spent his first 4 years. We were spoilt again with freshly baked scones with jam and cream.
Thanks to both Frankie and Clark and their families for teaching us about Ireland and United Kingdom, particularly London.

Great things happen at school each and every day!

Invermay PS Gr 6 student Charlotte has this week represented Australia in New York City, at the NBA Hoops Maths Global Challenge.

We have enjoyed updates and live chats from Charlotte and her family online this week, hearing that she had met and competed with kids from Korea, France, Mexico and the US. The 28 competitors and their families had enjoyed a welcome dinner, sightseeing, a little too much deep fried food, attended the NBA Draft and of course, three big days of Maths competition in The Big Apple.

Maths Hoops head to head competition requires maths fluency, data analysis, strategy, sportsmanship, a little luck with dice and strong social-emotional skills.

Over three days of head to head Maths competition, Charlotte experienced two wins, one tie and one loss, ultimately being knocked out in a final 12 eliminator match on Day 3.

What a wonderful opportunity for one of our kids to experience and for other IPS students to aspire toward. 🌟

A special shoutout to LearnFresh Org, NBA Hoops and also to our very own IPS Maths specialist teacher Steve Watts, for the time he invested planning and preparing for this opportunity. It all began with a small, inter-school Maths competition he chaperoned our Gr 5-6 students to in Castlemaine in Term 3 last year, followed by the State Championships in Melbourne in Term 4, which ultimately led to Charlotte's selection to represent Australia against students from around the globe this week … all expenses paid!

Congratulations Charlotte - we’re super proud of you!

**There’s no time like the present to practise your maths facts and fluency kids … we’ll be entering teams again this year 😀
