FUTURE TEACHERS | Aspire to Teach
Our Year 10 Aspire to Teach students enjoyed their second visit to St Rita's School, South Johnstone this week.

During the visit, students took the lead, guiding their Prep buddies through a fun mathematics activity focused on adding numbers to 10. There were a few nerves at first, but the Year 10 students quickly found their rhythm and had a wonderful time supporting the younger learners.

The Prep students loved having their secondary buddies there to help them learn, and, as the photos show, there were plenty of smiles all around! 😊

Our Year 10 students are already looking forward to returning in Week 9.

SPORT | All Schools Touch Wrap Up
Last weekend, Good Counsel College attended the annual All Schools Touch Football Carnival for the first time in over 20 years, with the college nominating an Under 15 Mixed side and an Opens Mixed side.

The schools came up against some of the best touch football schools between Cairns and Mackay, with our teams showing that they can compete with the best.

Our Open's side finished the carnival in 5th position, winning 4 of their matches in total. Our Under 15's side hit the ground running, winning all 6 of their pool matches, before going down in extra time in the semi-final, going down 2 tries to 1 in the drop off match.

All students enjoyed themselves and look forward to going again in 2027. A massive thank you to staff Dave Pedley, Jaala Pedley and Stuart Russell for spending their weekend with the students, and to our student referee, Lucian and Jade, for refereeing all weekend.

SPORT | GCC Vs Ignatius Park
This week our Year 7/8 and 9/10 football sides travelled to Townsville to take on fellow Liverpool partner school, Ignatius Park College. Both schools took park in a Liverpool workshop facilitated by the head of Liverpool Australia's International Academy, Kevin Grima before heading out to the pitch to battle it out.

The Year 7 and 8s battled hard and showed tremendous grit but were defeated by a very strong Year 8 Ignatius Park side.

The Year 9/10 team also had their work cut out for them, with both sides playing with heart. In a thrilling finish, our very own Brayden secured the victory with a last-minute winner.

Our standout performers were Noah from the 7 and 8 team for his performance and determination in the back line and Chaise for the 9 and 10 team for his outstanding skill between the posts, saving a multitude of shots to keep his team in the hunt.

Special thanks to Ignatius Park staff and students for their hospitality and inviting us down for what was a wonderful day of football.

SERVICE AWARDS

Executive Director of Catholic Education Diocese of Cairns, Mr Diarmuid O’Riordan, visited the College on Wednesday to present service awards to Mrs Basile, Mrs Snodgrass, Ms Goodes and Mrs Riera, who each celebrated 25 years of service, and Mr Korger, who celebrated 20 years.

Together, these milestones represent far more than the passing of time. They reflect 120 years of dedicated service, care and commitment, and countless contributions that have helped shape our College community.

A special morning tea was shared in their honour as colleagues gathered to recognise this wonderful achievement.

Congratulations and thank you! Your service is an important part of the Good Counsel College story.

SCIENCE WEEK 2026 | Seeds of Science
From growing crystals and creating seed balls to solving escape room puzzles, exploring leaf chromatography and enjoying Scinema, Science Week was packed with curiosity, creativity and discovery.

The competition was fierce, with homerooms battling for every point. Congratulations to Clancy House, who claimed the title with 257 points.
It was fantastic to see so many students getting involved, asking questions, trying new things and celebrating the wonder of science.

JCU HEROES IN SPORT | Exploring Future Pathways

Jeremy and Rylee recently qualified to attend JCU’s Heroes in Sport Day in Townsville.

The day provided an exciting opportunity to explore JCU’s range of sport-related degrees and discover the many study and career pathways available within the sporting industry.

Jeremy and Rylee toured the Townsville campus, explored its impressive facilities and visited the training environment used by the North Queensland Cowboys.

It was a valuable experience that offered both students an inspiring glimpse into where their passion for sport could take them.

BOOK WEEK | Story Time with Prep S
On Friday, Mrs Elliott stepped into character as Miss Sylvia Ashe, the crime-solving librarian from The Librarian of Crooked Lane, for a special read-aloud with Good Counsel Primary's Mrs Sinton’s Prep S class.

As excitement builds for Book Week next week, Mrs Elliott shared Olga the Brolga and Bob and Dob with the young readers. The Preps were thoroughly engaged and keen to hear even more, and Mrs Elliott is already looking forward to another invitation!

Book Week promises to be a busy one at GCC, with plenty of activities planned in the Library. Don’t forget our Favourite Book Character Dress-Up Day on Wednesday, 26 August—we can’t wait to see which characters step off the page and into the College!

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT | Bonnie-Ray's CSIRO Young Future Shapers Journey
Earlier this year, we celebrated Year 7 student Bonnie-Ray being selected as one of just 30 students nationwide from more than 700 applicants for the 2026 CSIRO Young Future Shapers Program.

As part of the program, Bonnie-Ray recently travelled to Darwin, where she explored health research at the Menzies School of Health Research, experienced drone technology and virtual reality at Charles Darwin University, investigated urban heat solutions and prawn aquaculture research at CSIRO, and learned about crocodile adaptations through hands-on experiences at Crocodylus Park.

From cutting-edge technology to real-world scientific research, Bonnie-Ray continues to embrace every opportunity to explore, discover and engage with STEM.
