We were delighted to welcome Young Haleian and Endeavour Award recipient Ruairi Avern (2023) back to campus recently to speak with the Year 7 students.

Ruairi shared his journey in motorsport, from winning the 2024 WA Karting Championship and State Titles, to signing with one of Australia’s most successful motorsports teams, Sonic Motor Racing, to compete in the 2026 Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge.

Ruairi's message to the boys was simple: stay curious, try new things and don’t worry about being the best. You never know where giving something a go might take you.

With so many opportunities on offer at Hale, Ruairi encouraged the students to make the most of them, explore their interests and see where they might lead.

It was great to welcome a few Young Haleians back to campus this week, with Clayton and Kyle Beagley and Owen Little, all from the Class of 2025, catching up with our current Year 12 ATAR Media students.

Owen is now studying Film and Television at Bond University in Queensland, while Clayton and Kyle will be heading there next year.

A great opportunity for our current students to hear first-hand about life beyond Hale and where a passion for media can lead.

Calling all Old Boys! 🏑

We need your support on Saturday as Hale Hockey takes on Christ Church in the battle for the Ray House Cup.

The Firsts have won all 11 games this season. One more win will see them finish undefeated and claim the Cup outright.

The game starts at 10:30am at the Hale hockey club, let's get behind the boys and help them finish the job!

A new display from the Syd Kirkby Collection is now on show in the Forrest Library at Hale School throughout Term 3. The display explores Syd Kirkby's 1954 expedition into the Great Sandy Desert, undertaken a few years after leaving Hale School and before his celebrated Antarctic career.

The display features an original expedition report, The Condition of the Canning Basin, which has recently been professionally conserved to preserve it for future generations. Visitors can also view photographs, report extracts and recorded reflections from Syd, offering a fascinating glimpse into the early career of one of our remarkable Old Haleians.

This exhibition highlights an important chapter in Syd's life and showcases the ongoing work to preserve and share the School Archives collection. Please stop by the Forrest Library next time you are on campus to have a look.

Each year, Hale School welcomes a professional philosopher to spend a week engaging with students, staff, parents and the broader community. This year, the School welcomes Dr Luara Ferracioli as the 2026 Philosopher in Residence.

Dr Ferracioli’s public lecture on Wednesday 2 September will explore one of the defining demographic challenges of our time: depopulation.

With fertility rates falling below replacement level in countries around the world, governments face difficult questions about the future of retirement systems, public services and our economies. Should we encourage higher fertility, delay retirement, improve productivity or increase skilled migration? And what are the ethical implications of each approach?

Old Haleians are warmly invited to attend this thought-provoking lecture.

Old boy and artist Max Evangelisti (2016) has recently launched Max’s Art Club, a platform designed for the display, appreciation and accessibility of fine art.

Max realised that artists were struggling to find a dedicated place to display their work and collectors sometimes don’t know where to go to access quality original art for sale. So he created Max’s Art Club. A platform that meets these needs, wrapped up in a community where users can also get on board with initiatives and events hosted by the Club.

Fellow Old Haleians, Jacob Morris (2016), Michael Hood (2017) and Campbell Dawson (2017) assisted in designing and creating the club.

Last Thursday, the Hale hockey community came together for the annual OHA vs Hale Hockey afternoon.

The Old Boys claimed victory in both the First and Second XI matches again this year. With players spanning generations, it was fantastic to see past and present Haleians sharing the field, competing with great spirit and enjoying the game together.

Thanks to all who gave up their afternoon to come and play against the students.

There’s plenty happening around the Hale School campus! The new Science and Engineering Building is really taking shape, while the Hale Aquatic Centre is undergoing a major refurbishment and will be ready to welcome swimmers back for Term 4.

A huge congratulations to Young Haleian Sam Bredell (2025), who recently donned the green and gold to represent Australia in the U19 B Team at the International Rowing Challenge in Michigan, USA.

Sam and his crew achieved impressive results that are a testament to their dedication, perseverance, and countless hours of hard work and training. We look forward to following Sam's rowing journey in the years ahead. 👏🇦🇺🚣‍♂️

Sam Bredell (FRC) has delivered an outstanding performance on the international stage, representing Australia in the U19 team at the USRowing International Rowing Challenge.

Racing against Canada, Mexico, New Zealand and the United States, Sam came away with an incredible medal haul:

• Gold – Men’s Double Scull (M2x)
• Gold – Men’s Quad Scull (M4x)
• Gold – Mixed Eight (Mix8+)
• Silver – Men’s Coxed Four (M4+)

A fantastic achievement for Sam and the entire Australian crew, under the guidance of coach David Vandas.

Next time you are on campus, take a moment to explore the new digital touchscreens in the Senior and Junior School foyers. These interactive displays showcase archival stories, House histories, sporting achievements and the journeys of Old Haleians who have helped shape the School.

A fantastic project spearheaded by the Hale Archives team, and well worth a look next time you visit.
