KMART HAUL… Sensory Fun edition 🛒🌈

You really don’t need fancy equipment to create brilliant sensory play.

Here are 6 Kmart finds that we use at Sensory Fun week after week after week!

🛒 Tuff tray - the base for SO many of our play invitations
🫧 Bubble mix - because bubbles never seem to lose their magic
🎨 Spray bottles - add washable paint and you’ve got a completely different way to create
〰️ Stretch noodles - pulling, stretching, twisting and squeezing
🐄 Little People - one of our most-used purchases! We use them in all sorts of small-world and sensory setups, from our littlest visitors through to our bigger kids
🤍 Shredded paper - simple, inexpensive and SO much fun for hiding, finding, scooping, throwing and exploring

My favourite thing is seeing an ordinary item on a shelf and thinking…

“What could we do with THAT?” 👀

And judging by how often these come back out at Sensory Fun, these ones have definitely earned their place in our play cupboard!

SAVE this one for your next Kmart trip 🛒

What would your little one make a beeline for first? 👇

POV: you thought it was just a sandpit… 👀

Then Sensory Fun happened. 😂

Sand ready for digging, the car wash open for business and plenty of gloriously messy play waiting for little hands.

The kind of play they LOVE…

and you don’t have to set up at home. 🙌

After 14+ years of Sensory Fun, there are a few things I know for sure…

The activities we spend the least time preparing are often the ones children stay with the longest.

The beautiful setup rarely looks the way we imagined five minutes after the doors open.

And if there’s one particularly messy activity in the room, somehow every child will find it. 😂

Over the years I’ve learnt to step back a little more, worry less about how an activity should be used and simply watch what children do with it.

Pouring something for the 20th time isn’t “just pouring”.

Mixing two activities together isn’t doing it wrong.

And play certainly doesn’t have to be expensive, complicated or picture-perfect to be valuable.

Sometimes the simplest things create the very best play.

More than 14 years on, I still love watching children surprise us with what they do, what they discover and where their play takes them. And I think that might be one of my favourite things about Sensory Fun. 💛 Kim x

We weren’t quite sure how this one was going to go… but it was MAGIC! ✨💛

Today at Sensory Fun, our little scientists discovered hidden pictures using turmeric art.

The pictures were first created with a bicarbonate mixture and left to dry, so when the children arrived they looked almost completely blank. Then came the magic… 🪄

As they brushed over the paper with our turmeric solution, the hidden pictures began to appear!

And once they realised there was something hiding underneath, there was no stopping them. Every little corner had to be painted just in case there was something else to discover. 😂

It was such a beautiful combination of art, sensory play, curiosity and simple science and one of those activities that worked even better than we hoped.

✨ How to try it at home:

1. Mix bicarbonate + water (approx. 1 tsp bicarbonate to 2 teaspoons water)
2. Paint the clear liquid onto paper
3. Let it dry completely
4. Mix turmeric powder with hand sanitiser (½ tsp turmeric to 2 tsp sanitiser)
5. Paint over the dried paper and watch the magic appear ✨

⚠️ Note: Turmeric can stain clothes and surfaces, so be careful!
📲 Save this for next time you're looking for a fun activity to try at home

What does a scientist look like when you’re little? 🔬🌿🧪

Sometimes they’re mixing fizzy potions.

Sometimes they’re testing what sinks and floats, making music, looking for living things, exploring how their body moves or creating whole little worlds through play.

And sometimes… they’re wearing a dinosaur tail. 🦖💛

For Science Week at Sensory Fun, our little scientists became chemists, physicists, biologists, zoologists, environmental scientists, acoustic scientists, social scientists and more.

But underneath all of those different experiences was something we see at Sensory Fun every week - children learning by doing.

Pouring. Mixing. Moving. Testing. Wondering. Trying again. Talking. Imagining. Discovering.

It might look like play to us, but there is so much learning happening along the way.

And the best part? They don’t need to know they’re “doing science”. They’re simply curious enough to find out what happens next.

💛 Families are always welcome to come and explore Sensory Fun with us.

And for our early learning, kindy and school community, we also offer Sensory Discovery Excursions at Sensory Fun - giving children the chance to explore 20+ hands-on play invitations in our indoor and outdoor spaces.

Because little scientists need plenty of room to investigate.

🌈 This is what a morning at Sensory Fun looks like…

Colourful, messy, creative, curious and full of PLAY. 💛💙💚❤️

Every session is filled with different invitations to scoop, pour, squish, splash, create, discover and explore with plenty for little hands and curious minds to choose from.

There’s no right way to play here. Children can explore what interests them, in their own way and at their own pace - while grown-ups can join in, connect and enjoy it too.

There's always lots to discover at Sensory Fun. 🌈
