Sally the Printmaker

Sally the Printmaker A passionate artist collecting recruits for her printmaking posse. Why don't you join the tribe? we could go on. Why not come and join the print party soon?

Being creative is in her DNA

Sally’s artistic inclinations began the moment she was able to pick up a coloured pencil. Her childhood was spent growing up in the Australian bush, now living in the Adelaide Hills, Sally can be found in the outdoors wandering, dreaming, and gaining inspiration from her surroundings. Majoring in illustration at the University of South Australia, Sally has spent more

than 20 years heading up a high-profile Design and Marketing consultancy firm here in Adelaide, South Australia. Her love of printmaking stems from a reaction against the digital, the mass-produced and overexposure to advertising. To use print as a way of making art – every time you lift that bit of paper off the plate you never know what you are going to get – no matter how much planning you do. It is all those happy accidents – interesting marks, the way the ink sits on paper, even the plate ….. She regularly teaches small group printmaking workshops, empowering students with her relaxed and fun sessions. Sally loves to see people’s confidence bloom as the realisation takes hold that they, too, can be creative. The joy that participants get from taking home their own print at the end of the day is a great motivator for her.

This is what a weekend away with me looks like. A celebration of creativity, good food and great company.

It is finally live..... Learn the magical art of Eco Botanical Printmaking.

Because what if your beautiful botanical contact prints could become so much more than a single sheet of paper?

In this new online course, I’ll show you how to take those gorgeous prints made from leaves and foliage and turn them into books, layered artworks, keepsakes and meaningful pieces of art.

I’m especially interested in the idea of capturing a sense of place.

The leaves you gather on a bushwalk.
The eucalyptus from your favourite spot.
The foliage growing around your home.
That little collection of botanical treasures you couldn't resist bringing back to the studio.

Instead of simply collecting them. I will show you how to print with them, and we’re going to explore how those prints can become memories of the places you love.
> Print
> Layer
> Fold
> Combine
🌿 Create something completely new that is made from the heart.

This is about giving your botanical prints another life and seeing just how far you can push the possibilities.

The course is now soft launched, so if botanical contact printing has been calling your name, this is your invitation to come and play.

Turn your foraged leaves into art, books and memories.

Come and explore the new course here: https://www.caston.com.au/courses/eco-printing/

Grab a cuppa, gather some leaves and let’s see where your prints can take you.

Fireside evenings - burning someone else's wood is always great! Thanks, Don!

Walks, fresh air and a chance to breathe out
A little bit of creative mischief
Trying something new
Sharing ideas, skills and inspiration

Cheering each other on
Celebrating each other’s creativity

What if you knew that you could create and there was no wrong way of doing it? That it was simply fun, and you would walk away with your soul full of joy?

I regularly run a session we call 'a Creative Pause'. I can’t lay claim to the name, but when I saw an online friend call her session just that, I knew Hannah was onto something.

Because this session is exactly that.

You pause.
You reflect.
You simply do.

I gently take you through a handful of steps, and together we work on creating a piece that is totally unique to the group. We build it layer by layer, gently allowing the creative process to evolve right in front of us.

It is one of the most magical and beautiful things to come out of my weekends away.

Previously, I’ve kept this session a little secret, and guests haven’t known exactly what was on the itinerary. But over the years, it has become very much a highlight of the weekend.

A fire keeping us warm in the corner. Awesome, melodic tunes. Good, healthy energy harnessed in one room. We work together in a creative way, building on each other’s lines and marks. Creating something that can only be celebrated. And then, upon completion, sometimes after a few hours, sometimes after many hours and perhaps a few glasses of wine. Either way, the session becomes a celebration of a bunch of creative humans coming together under one roof.

I often go to bed (eventually) absolutely buzzing, wondering why more people aren’t doing this. Creating together in one big communal space. Creating joy, one mark at a time.

Imagine, if we did, what a world this would be. A world where we celebrate each other, celebrate creativity, and celebrate the space we are in.

Want in? DM me and let’s talk.

TRY THIS. Make small Collagraph plates on theme. Try different tape, maybe carving into them, basically try other ways to make marks. All the while you are creating.

This weekend I’m exploring oyster shells.

TRY THIS! So many of you have been messaging me to get stuck into collagraphs.

In this new on-demand course, I walk you through all my creative tricks and techniques I wish I’d known when I first started.

Using everyday materials (mostly out of your recycling bins), we’ll create super sexy textured plates and discover just how much creative goodness you can squeeze out of a simple collagraph. Whilst you will walk away with prints that are so sellable!
