Kick Up The Artz

Kick Up The Artz is a new acting and creative movement training studio that prepares young people for future adventures in the arts. Our focus is on providing our students with the skills and knowledge they need to become confident, well-rounded and collaborative performers. By undertaking weekly classes in both acting and creative movement, students will develop practical skills

and knowledge that will consolidate and extend their existing performance skills. Kick Up The Artz classes are offered to young people from Year 5 to Year 12. Our Philosophy

Kick Up The Artz firmly believes in the power of drama and creative movement to instil positivity, self-confidence and resilience in young people. Our classes will always strive to be:
• fun
• supportive
• focussed
• motivating
• practical

Our Classes

Students who enrol in Kick Up The Artz will do a combination of Acting with Larissa Riddell and Creative Movement with Amy Anselmi. Class times will vary with age, and students will be grouped with similarly aged peers. Classes will run with the school terms, with Term 4 classes ending at the beginning of December. Acting classes will explore characterisation skills, voice techniques, script interpretation, naturalistic and non-naturalistic performance styles and theatrical conventions, ensemble and solo work, and improvisation. Creative Movement classes will include movement improvisation, safe floor-based movement practices, pair and group work, relaxation and focussing exercises, expressive intention development, and creative use of space, time and energy. Open classes will be held each term for family and friends to view the students’ work. Our classes support students to involve themselves in the artistic endeavours of the wider Wimmera community. Where appropriate, Kick Up The Artz will engage guest artists from the industry to work with students. Our Teachers

Our tertiary qualified teachers bring a wealth of experience in education and performance. They cater for skill levels ranging from beginner to advanced, and set attainable yet challenging goals for students to strive towards. Small class sizes allow teachers to give each student individual attention to find out what motivates them and how they can best achieve their goals. Larissa has 18 years experience in secondary and primary performing arts education. For the last five years she has also worked as a freelance drama teacher and has helped to prepare VCE students for tertiary acting entrance auditions. Amy is a creative and innovative dance teacher, choreographer and improvisational movement practitioner with over fifteen years' experience in dance education. She has taught VCE Dance in both a school setting, and as a private tutor. Amy regularly attends workshops and conferences to update her knowledge of safe movement techniques and advances in contemporary choreographic dance practices. Our Look

All Kick Up The Artz students are expected to attend classes wearing confortable black clothes, such as leggings/tracksuit pants and singlet or t-shirt. Bare feet are preferred. ‘Kick Up The Artz’ t-shirts will be available to purchase. Our Fees

Fees are payable by the term. Payment may be made in cash or by direct deposit. Further information regarding fees will be provided upon enrolment.

Have a read of the next exciting theatrical venture! Anyone above the age of 13 can audition 😃

Our season of Shuddersome will be performed at the gorgeous STAR THEATRE in Dimboola as part of the official program of the 2023 Wimmera Steampunk Festival! We are so excited to continue our philosophy of collaboration with local artists and entrepreneurs. Remember to book your audition using the EventBrite link. All auditionees are asked to prepared an “up-to-2-minute”interpretation of the Edgar Allan Poe poem 'The Raven' - a copy of the poem will be emailed to you after you book your audition - this could be simply a spoken version of a part of the poem to show your acting ability, or some improvised movement if you are going for a movement/dance role. If you're unsure what to do, please get in touch with us here on FB for a chat. https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/auditions-of-shuddersome-tales-of-poe-tickets-467288381127?fbclid=IwAR3r31rpU0cOuhwZvjX-MIGUDMSR9JHYaXVKFeWN8PATudZhsdhMyRSMA-M

Greetings!
With the weird and wacko 2020 behind us, we have taken the time to reflect and make a number of quite significant changes to our Kick Up the Artz program.
It became quite apparent to us during last year how crammed and busy our lives were when suddenly, thanks to Covid-19, everything was pared down and simplified. We both found we time to take care of ourselves, relax and enjoy the simple pleasure of just `being'.
It is thus we've decided to reformat Kick Up the Artz classes.
We will no longer be offering a weekly class, but rather joining Kick Up the Artz to Smart Artz Theatre Company. We intend to offer performance opportunities for young people between 8-18 years of age where they will learn acting and movement skills over a rehearsal process leading up to public performances. There will still be a strong focus on movement and acting skills and group-based learning as we have done in the past, but over a few months rather than classes for the whole year.
We understand this may cause some disappointment for our students who have loved attending weekly classes. Rest assured we have loved teaching them, but now is the time to revamp what has been and stride boldly toward a new goal!
We will keep our Kick Up the Artz page running for upcoming information and performance opportunities, so keep glancing in this direction. It certainly looks like the performing arts scene in Horsham will be slowly reappearing, so we will be definitely making plans for the very near future.

Alas and alack! It is with great disappointment we announce Kick Up will not run this Thursday due to the closure of schools and other non-essential activities. Naturally, we think we’re extremely essential, BUT your health and safety must come first.
It’s not quite the BANG! we wanted to end with, but never fear! We will be challenging you with many artistic challenges via this page over the following weeks. Brace yourselves for a wealth of dramatic shenanigans!
We’ll be thinking of you fondly and can’t wait to see you all again.

Creative Movement game “Obstacles” promotes creative use of our bodies, cooperation, quick thinking and ingenuity. (And it makes everyone laugh.) We did this with both our senior and junior classes to the Mission Impossible and James Bond Theme Music. 😄
