MUSIC // Our Yr 9 Accelerated Music class presented their depth study compositions and performances to an audience of parents staff and friends on Wednesday 2nd September.

The five students composed and performed a series of quintets based on their own special interest areas which included jazz, the plays of Shakespeare and cosmic phenomena.

The amazing effort they put in to the project resulted in a very interesting and profoundly moving concert. Well done!

JUNIOR SCHOOL // Our Junior School students enjoyed a special Father’s Day morning with their dads and the important men in their lives.

The morning began with a special Chapel service, followed by plenty of fun in the classrooms, games and activities on the oval, and a morning tea shared together. It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to celebrate and spend time with the special father figures in their lives.

We wish all the dads and father figures in the Barker College community a very special Father’s Day this Sunday.

SECONDRY SCHOOL // Congratulations to Heidi (Year 12), who presented at PyCon 2026 on Friday at the Sofitel Brisbane Central.

An outstanding achievement and a wonderful opportunity to showcase her skills beyond the classroom. Well done, Heidi!

ARCHIVES // A heartfelt thank you to Barker parent Roz and her son Robbie (Year 12) for their generous donation of a 1923 Athletics Carnival trophy to the Barker Archives.

Awarded to Eric Holt for winning the Under 13 Sack Race, this small trophy opened the door to a remarkable story. Eric attended Barker from 1921 to 1930 as a student , boarder, and keen sportsman. He later served as an RAAF pilot during the Second World War, flew Prime Minister Ben Chifley on an official tour of New Guinea, and was awarded the prestigious Air Force Cross for courage and devotion to duty. His legacy continues today through Arthursleigh, the University of Sydney's teaching and research farm near Goulburn.

More than a century after it was awarded, this trophy reminds us that even the smallest objects can reveal extraordinary stories.

Thank you, Roz and Robbie, for helping us preserve and share Barker's rich history.

HSC SHOWCASE // This week we celebrated our remarkable Year 12 Extension 2 English students and the culmination of their Major Works.

This year’s Showcase was particularly significant, marking the final cohort to complete the Major Work in its current form after more than 25 years. Their work reflects the extraordinary value of sustained creative thinking: the time to pursue an idea deeply, take intellectual risks, and create something genuinely their own.

Congratulations to our talented writers, thinkers and creators, and to their teachers.

PYP EXHIBITION // On Wednesday evening, our Year 6 students proudly presented the 2026 PYP Exhibition in the Multi-Purpose Hall, marking the culmination of their Primary Years Program journey.

This year's Exhibition explored the transdisciplinary theme How We Express Ourselves through the central idea that voices have power.

Families and staff were treated to an inspiring opening ceremony featuring music, drama and creative performances that challenged us to consider how our voices can influence, inspire and create positive change.

BOOK WEEK // The Barker College Library has been a hive of activity this week for the penultimate literary event in the library calendar... Book Week! 📚 This years theme was Symphony of Stories. There have been scavenger hunts, musical screens, student performances, engaging displays and a number of competitions, to celebrate reading and the joy it brings to so many of our students.

Book Week also coincides with the Children Book Council of Australia (CBCA) announcement for the top books in Australia for young readers. A group of students participated in Shadow Judging, where they read all the Notable books in the Older Readers category. They discuss the books literary merit before finally selecting the one they think should win. The students then submit a creative response. Next week they will participate in a Youth Forum with other independent schools, presenting on a panel to discuss the Notable books. 📖

Thank you to all the students who got involved, participated in competitions and joined us in celebrating reading. ✨
