Oliver Derecki from MG Masonry is currently completing his Cathedral Stonemasonry Scholarship at Gloucester Cathedral. Here he is undertaking some conservation work at the Cathedral, working pins into stone to temporarily hold weight whilst new stones are worked to replace old failing stone. We'd like to thank CITB South Australia for their continued support of the Cathedral Scholarship programme and the Cathedral Workshop Fellowship for assisting with Ollie's placement. Ollie will return to work in November to apply his skills to South Australia's built heritage. Department for Education, South Australia Lucy Hood MP

Oliver Derecki is the latest graduate Stonemasonry Apprentice to be awarded a scholarship to travel to Gloucester Cathedral in the UK for advanced training.

Ollie commenced his apprenticeship as a school based apprentice before quickly transitioning to full time. Ollie's employer, Matt Gross of MG Masonry, has been outstanding in his support of Ollie during his apprenticeship and now his scholarship. Visit https://mgmasonry.com.au/ to see their work.

Thank you to the Cathedral Workshop Fellowship (CWF) for facilitating Ollivers placement with the team at the Gloucester Cathedral. Oliver will start his placement in October.

Thank you also to the who has once again provided support for the Cathedral Scholarship.

Ollie will be following in the footsteps of previous scholarship graduates , and . These stonemasons represent the future of heritage conservation in Adelaide, gaining the specialist skills needed to preserve our beautiful historic buildings through training opportunities found nowhere else in Australia.

These scholarships have been made possible as a direct outcome of my Churchill Fellowship, sponsored by the Park Family, which gave me the opportunity to travel internationally, study best practice in heritage trade skills training, and bring those learnings home to South Australia.

I’m incredibly pleased to see that experience now translating into real training opportunities for the next generation of heritage tradespeople. Congratulations Ollie, we look forward to your return!

Congratulations to Nick Angwin from Tradition Rebuilt Stonemasonry for achieving a Worldskills Gold Medal & completing his Certificate III in Stonemasonry. Nick came first in the WorldSkills Australia regional competition held at the old Adelaide Gaol site earlier this year. As an adult apprentice Nick was able to fast track his apprenticeship and complete some outstanding projects. The FCTA team will miss Nick at trade school but have no doubt he will achieve every success in the future. Well done Nick! Warren Baff 17/5/1970 - 20/4/2026

Warren passed away Monday 20th April, after suffering a heart attack and holding on for two long weeks while doctors did everything they could to save him.

He leaves behind his daughters, Shannon and Brittany, his grandson Oscar, and his sister Trisch.

He was a man of contradictions, quick to laugh, quick to feel things deeply, and never far from a thought that wandered into the abstract. He experienced the world intensely, and those who knew him saw both the challenges he carried and the warmth he could offer.

One of his greatest joys was his former work as a trainer. He took pride in guiding young people entering the building industry, sharing not just skills but his time, his stories, and his belief in their potential. Many will remember him for the way he connected, unfiltered, genuine, and deeply human.

Now, he is reunited with his much loved parents, Lorraine and Jim. It is hoped that, at last, he has found the peace that sometimes eluded him in life.

He will be remembered with honesty, complexity, and love.

A big congratulations to Carly Kroehn from JRM Stonework
on completing her Certificate III in Stonemasonry. In 2022, Carly took the initiative to arrange work experience with both Christian Frenzel, photographed here shaking Carly's hand, and FCTA. For work experience at FCTA, we had Carly team up with Bianca Taylor. 4 years later, Carly has completed her studies with the very people she started her journey with. Well done Carly! .boyermp Department for Education, South Australia

A big congratulations to wall and floor tiling graduate Silas Freeth who completed his training this week after 9 years! Silas’ is a story of great perseverance and hard work having at times been seemingly lost to the industry. We first trained Silas as a fresh-faced certificate II student in 2014 and he leaves us today as a mature and extremely competent tiler with a young family of his own .sa

Oliver has been an outstanding student. We’re always happy to see our apprentices complete their training, but it’s bittersweet to no longer be able to catch up as often once they do. We’re looking forward to seeing Ollie progress with his career in the coming years. Well done Ollie!
