Models are starting to indicate that a significant snow event could occur on Tuesday, with snow possibly falling down to 300-500 meters or maybe even 200 meters down south! If this does eventuate, it will be a highly unusual snow event for October, even for Tassie standards.

Aurora chances Looking more promising tonight.

🌌 AURORA AUSTRALIS OUTLOOK β€” TASMANIA TONIGHT 🌌

Saturday 10 October 2026

There is a reasonable chance of photographic aurora activity across Tasmania tonight, particularly across southern parts of the state.

Geomagnetic activity is currently sitting around Kp 3, with modelling suggesting activity could remain around Kp 3–4 through parts of tonight.

The Australian Space Weather Forecasting Centre currently has G0 conditions forecast with a chance of G1 geomagnetic storm conditions as lingering CME influences continue.

πŸ“Έ Photographic Aurora Chance: MODERATE
πŸ‘€ Visible Aurora Chance: LOW–MODERATE
⚑ Overall Potential: MODERATE

For Tasmania, Kp 3 can be enough for aurora activity around the southern horizon, while Kp 4 provides better prospects across the state. Whether we actually get a decent display will depend heavily on solar-wind conditions and the magnetic-field orientation during the night.

☁️ CLOUD CONDITIONS TONIGHT

⭐ Hobart & Southeast β€” GOOD

Partly cloudy and largely dry around Hobart and much of the Southeast tonight. There should be plenty of breaks available for viewing, although cloud may be more extensive towards the far south.

⭐ East Coast β€” GOOD TO VERY GOOD

Partly cloudy conditions with little rainfall expected. The East Coast should offer some of Tasmania's better viewing conditions tonight.

⭐ Northwest Coast β€” IMPROVING

Earlier showers are easing with skies becoming mostly clear around places such as Devonport. Good viewing opportunities should develop through the evening.

πŸŒ₯️ Launceston & Central North β€” FAIR TO GOOD

Showers have mainly been an afternoon and early-evening feature, so conditions should gradually improve tonight with breaks developing.

🌧️ West & Southwest β€” POOR TO FAIR

Still the least favourable part of Tasmania, with patchy cloud and further showers expected. There may be occasional breaks, but viewing will be much more hit-and-miss.

πŸŒ‘ PERFECT MOON CONDITIONS

One big advantage tonight is the almost completely dark Moon.

The Moon is only around 0.5% illuminated, sets around 7:09pm in Hobart, and New Moon occurs at 2:50am Sunday. That means virtually no moonlight interference tonight β€” excellent conditions for spotting faint photographic aurora.

🌌 BEST AREAS: Southern Tasmania, Tasman Peninsula, Southeast and East Coast locations with a clear southern horizon.

πŸ“± Even if you can't see colour with your eyes, try taking a phone photo using Night Mode β€” cameras can often detect faint pink or green aurora before it becomes obvious visually.

Tonight is worth keeping an eye south. I wouldn't call it a guaranteed display, but conditions are certainly interesting enough to have the camera ready.

More snow coming!

πŸ₯Ά ANOTHER ANTARCTIC BLAST TO BRING SPRING SNOW TO TASMANIA!

Winter is making another comeback next week, with a series of vigorous cold fronts bringing strong winds, showers, small hail and snowfall across Tasmania's elevated areas.

A particularly cold air mass will move across the state during Monday and Tuesday, with temperatures dropping sharply as winds shift west to southwesterly.

❄️ FORECAST SNOW LEVELS

Western Tasmania: Snow falling to around 500–600 metres.

Central Plateau: Snow falling above 600 metres.

Southern Highlands: Snow showers possible across elevated areas, particularly above 600 metres.

Northeastern Highlands: Snow possible about the higher peaks, depending on available moisture.

πŸ”οΈ AREAS MOST LIKELY TO SEE SNOW

❄️ Cradle Mountain and Dove Lake

❄️ Mount Field National Park

❄️ Central Plateau and Great Lake

❄️ Western Tiers

❄️ Mount Wellington / kunanyi

❄️ Ben Lomond (higher elevations)

WHEN WILL SNOWFALL OCCUR?

Snow will develop across higher elevations during Monday as colder air moves into Tasmania, with snow levels lowering further into Tuesday.

The best opportunities for snowfall are expected during Tuesday morning and afternoon, particularly across western and central highland areas.

🌨️ OTHER WEATHER HAZARDS

Small hail possible in western and central districts.

Gusty west to southwesterly winds.

Freezing temperatures across elevated areas.

Icy roads possible across highland routes, particularly early in the morning.

⚠️ TRAVELLERS AND BUSHWALKERS

Anyone travelling through the Central Plateau, Great Lake, Mount Field or western highlands should prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions, reduced visibility and possible snow or ice on exposed roads.

Snow levels and snowfall amounts may change as the system approaches.
