VIET VO, formerly Viet Vo Dao meaning "the way of Vietnamese Martial Arts" is the generic name given to any martial arts originating from Vietnam. The style was introduced to Tasmania in the early 1980s by Tri Tri Tran, a master of the style who increased its focus by becoming a two time Australasian Kung Fu Champion and former Australian Kick Boxing Champion. Each class emphasises correct techniq
For those that progressed through their green to blue belts, here's Punching Set (again, with a young(er) Sean Mennitz. This was always a favourite of mine and had a lovely flow.
Note: some variation occurred at a stage, whereby after the left hook into horse stance and the skip to the right, the 3 straight punches evolved/devolved into a high to low movement in horse stance. The punches would then be (after skipping with left hand in hook position): right straight to the head, sink in stance to throw left straight to the chest, sink in stance to throw right to the midriff/groin before moving into the cross stance left downward punch.
Otherwise, the focus here is on acceleration through the length of punches and utilisation of core movement for the rotating punches (over hand figure 8s and the last front to back uppercut movement).
There's also been a request for kicking set to be posted.
Make no mistake, there is a reason this set is only included at the mid to high belts. Footwork, transition and balance are key, more so in this set than many others. The inability (for the most) to use one's hands and arms as balance or to assist in physical ex*****on means that leg and hip control are paramount.
Apologies to those who have waited for so long. Here's 1st Pattern. Best watch the white belt far right for the better flow and movement, apologies I don't remember his name (someone can refresh my memory!)
Hi all students of Viet Vo. Apologies for the delay in getting these patterns up on a regular basis.
Here's 2nd Pattern (featuring a young Sean Mennitz ).
Remember this pattern starts to encompass hard and soft techniques: so firm and explosive on strikes, fluid and smooth on circular movements.
Okay, here's the first attempt at video editing, so please forgive any harsh cuts.
Like any good student, I promise to learn and get better, but in the mean time here's the Elbow Set.
Note: Times have changed and the 2nd movement of the upper elbow from the long front stance has evolved/devolved from looking under the arm pit (elbow tracking outside the line of the head) to the elbow moving in an upward and across position so that the left hand crosses in front of the body and your chin tucks into your shoulder (left hand touches the right collar).
Feet have the same movement.
Hello to all former students who have followed this page. As stated previously, we've had to close the physical club at the Hobart campus of UTAS.
Quite a few students from years past have requested if there's any footage/videos of patterns available so that they may return to self-practice.
Up until now, there's only been the handful that we recorded and placed on here in the last days of the club.
However, former head of school Graeme L has digitised old taped footage of some gradings and I will be doing my best to edit individual patterns out of the footage and post them on here.
Please send me a message through here for any questions.

Hello all, it is with sadness that Viet Vo's association with the Tasmania University Union has come to an end. Our class numbers were unsustainable and for the moment, the club is in hiatus.
The page will still continue to exist and where possible, there may be informal training sessions, maybe taking advantage of the long summer evenings here in Hobart.
Thank you to every one who has trained and supported Viet Vo (Dao) over the years.
There will be no training tonight. News about the future of the club will be posted soon.
Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances, training is not going ahead tonight. Apologies for the late notice.
