Beacon Foundation is proud to be part of the Australian Government's Local Jobs, Local People Grants initiative, supporting young people to build confidence, skills and connections to future employment opportunities in their local communities.

Working in partnership with Hobart PCYC (PCYC) and Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (TCCI), the initiative will support a group of young people (Hobart and Launceston) to build resilience and sense of belonging, career confidence and connections to employment through industry engagement, career development experiences and pathways.

This collaborative approach brings together schools, employers and community organisations to help young people better understand local opportunities and build the skills and confidence needed for the future world of work.

Beacon Foundation CEO Scott Harris said the initiative highlights the importance of community-led solutions that respond to local workforce needs.

“When organisations come together with a shared purpose, real impact happens. Reset to Ready provides holistic support for targeted young people who need it most, with PCYC building trusted connections and guidance, Beacon strengthening employability skills and confidence, and TCCI partnering with employers to create meaningful pathways into work.”

Students from Brooks High School, Launceston recently took part in a HIP Polish program delivered through the Local Futures Project in Launceston, helping young people build confidence, strengthen self advocacy skills and explore future pathways through real world industry connection.

Delivered in partnership with City of Launceston Official, Strait Link and Jackson Motor Company (JMC), the program gave students the opportunity to hear directly from local professionals about career journeys, transferable skills and workplace expectations.

Throughout the day, volunteers shared valuable insights into the world of work and the skills that matter most across different industries.

Renee from Strait Link highlighted the importance of problem solving and conflict resolution, while Maeve spoke about adaptability as an essential skill within Human Resources. Claudia from City of Launceston Official shared how no two days are the same in local government, with work spanning community programs, planning and outreach, while Jayden discussed the variety involved in mapping systems, infrastructure projects and prioritising daily tasks.

When asked for interview advice, volunteers encouraged students to prepare well, research organisations, ask questions about workplace culture and most importantly, be authentic and confident in themselves.

Students reflected positively on the experience, with one sharing, “The mock interviews and writing my elevator pitch down really helped me as it built my confidence and I feel more prepared.”

Another student said, “I was able to gain knowledge about entering the workforce. The advice was very helpful and I feel more confident.”

As National Volunteer Week wraps up, we also want to thank the industry volunteers who continue to give their time, knowledge and lived experience to support young people across Beacon programs. Your contribution helps students build confidence, expand their horizons and better understand the opportunities available within their local community.
