✨✨Welcome to December!!✨✨
I hope you and your little ones are enjoying getting into the Christmas spirit. Whilst the festive period is usually lots of fun, it is important to keep in mind that Christmas isn’t a one size fits all. What suits you and your little ones might not be the same as what works for others. Christmas can look different, and that’s perfectly ok. This time of year brings about lots of changes to routines, sensory experiences and a packed social calendar for little ones.
Supports that could be helpful to consider:
🎅🏻 Put the decorations up gradually and encourage your little one to get involved. This way they can see the change happening and have time to process the changes at home.
🎄 Decline some social invitations. Focus on the ones that are important to you. It’s ok not to go to everything.
🎅🏻 Take your child’s preferred food to an event. Whilst festive foods can be a real treat for some, your child may not feel the same way.
🎄 Build in some chill time. Let you little one regulate in the way that works for them.
🎅🏻 Pack a sensory kit to take with you when out and about. Maybe some noise cancelling headphones could be useful.
🎄 Manage routines for predictability. If there will be a change to a known routine, let your little one know in advance. Social stories and visual supports can be very useful for this.
🎅🏻 Pick a good time to do things. Maybe call ahead to see when the less busy times are and aim to schedule your visit for then.
✨✨ Most importantly, have a lovely Christmas, however you want it!! ✨✨

CliniKids' new online autism seminar – Five tips for helping autistic kids communicate – will be held on Thursday, November 21, 5-6pm (AWST).
In this seminar, Professor Andrew Whitehouse (CliniKids Director and Professor of Autism Research at The Kids Research Institute Australia) and Sarah Pillar (Research Development Manager at CliniKids) will share five key reflections on what they have learned from working with autistic children, their families, and those who seek to support them.
Andrew and Sarah will focus on the practical things people can do to help children reach their full potential, with the suggestions based on what we know from research; what has been learned through practice; and what autistic children, young people, and adults have shown us and told us is helpful. Both speakers will be available for questions at the end of the seminar.
Registration for the free seminar is necessary to gain access to the webinar link. A recording of the presentation will be able to be viewed for up to a fortnight after the presentation by those who register.

UPDATE: Significant reform to Australia's Migration System - Children born and ordinarily resident in Australia now exempt from health-related criteria that could have made them ineligible for a visa.
This change follows significant advocacy by the Welcoming Disability campaign and our supporters over a number of years.
