I’m Ashley, an Infant and Toddler Specialist focusing on 0-3 mental health with respectful parenting Hi, I’m Ashley! With Love + Courage
Ashley

An Infant and Toddler specialist, nature-loving, play advocate, and fellow mama, based in Hobart, Tasmania. I am utterly obsessed with creating and holding space for curious parents to come together in village-like classes and cultivate co-regulated, reciprocal relationships with children from birth. I love observing the slow, and gentle transformation that occurs within the sacred parent-child re

Is a common term used in connection with attachment and refers to the repeated returns a child makes to an attachment figure for emotional reassurance and comfort while they are exploring their environment.

👶🏼 When are infants communicating their need for refueling time?

✨ An infant crying after spending some time on the floor is an infant calling out for connection.

✨ An infant remaining close to their primary carer when in new surroundings is an infant communicating the need for connection through close proximity.

✨ An infant crying their carer leaves the room, is an infant communicating their need for connection

🤍 What does refueling time look like?

❣️ Eye contact

❣️ Slow interactions

❣️ Lots of heart-to-heart breathing

❣️ Hugs and comfort

❣️ Two-way communication

❣️ Being with each other

There are so many other ways we can connect with our children, tell me your ways below!

To explore what this really looks like in practice we’ve decided to offer a shared space for parents and their babies to come together to share in our experiences, and in our learning, as we model co-regulation communication with games, songs, stories, lots of play! ❣️

🤌🏽 Something they don’t tell you before the baby arrives - breastfeeding can be soooooo hard!

I know in my journey
I was a lucky one with colostrum coming in prior to birth, a baby who latched easily enough most of the time, a supply that flowed.

I know in my journey
as an educator, working with new families for over 15 years, having friends that are midwives and lactation consultant’s, being around the cognitive understanding of what breastfeeding is …

NOTHING prepared me for the humongous change my body went through almost overnight, the best positions to be in, the potential tongue tie, the reflux, the vomit, change in supply depending on my diet, blocked ducts, mastitis!!

I called the ABA helpline so many times. Like SO many times.

They were the supportive reassuring friend on the other side of the phone helping me balance it all!

‼️ It appears that the ABA helpline will not continue to be funded by the Govt after June this year! ‼️

I NEEDED these supportive guidance calls.

👩🏻‍🍼 All new mamas NEED access to this service.

Join me and the ABA in emailing our local MPs to demand this remains available and funded.

The ABA have cleverly whipped together a template that you type in your postcode and your MP pops up. Hit send and you’re done!

Please share this far and wide, even if you’re not expecting or a mum,
YOU know someone who is,
YOU have friends who may want to become mums and would benefit from this service.
WE need this support for all mothers!

Find the link in my stories and link tree. ✨

Thank you ☺️

We wholeheartedly value this scientifically proven parenting approach and honour that each child born into this world has the right to be held with reverence and respected from their very first day earthside. 🤍

I hear you asking …
“How do we do this though?”

“They’re so little, like a sponge, surely we can just wait until they're 6 months and really starting to respond to us?”

From the beginning (even within the womb), our infants respond to our voices. How cool is that?!

When they arrive in your arms, a human being, you’ve created and birthed, in your arms, is just that, A WHOLEHEARTED HUMAN BEING.

So even in the beginning,
👀 eye contact,
🤪 facial expressions, and
🤱🏽 our gentle warm touch supports the relationship.

Still, the thing that respectful parenting brings is viewing your baby as capable from birth and using

COMMUNICATION as a two-way model for building the foundations of a respectful relationship from day one! 🙌🏽

Talking to your newest family member about;

Their day,

Their needs,

Their emotions,

The new world they’ve just entered,

The simplicities of life, having a shower, brushing teeth, getting water, leaving the room etc.

❣️ And then wait a few moments for any shift in gaze, movement, sound, or expression….

You’ll be AMAZED at how much they respond to you 🥰

I’d love to hear from you, comment below and let me know if this is something you’ve tried out.

It’s the longest time and the shortest time.

Where this new found purpose of mine has rearranged parts of me from before to make room for a love I never knew existed.
It’s floating and drowning in the space of mere minutes.
It’s whipping around at the sound of “mummy”, to be surprised with “I love you”, instead of a demand.
It’s tears and tantrums, safety and surrender.
It’s where words become sentences before you know it.
It’s counting down the minutes until bed time and shedding a tear at night wishing you’d been more present, wondering if they know how loved they are.

It’s the longest time and the shortest time.

Forever a mother, forever wearing the scent of another, forever in love and stopping and starting chores, thoughts, conversations.
It’s holding their little hearts and wearing their feelings. It’s crowded toilets, dirty windows and a pure imagination that makes you want to cry.
It’s hoping you’re doing enough now so they can brave the world without you one day.
It’s feeling so deeply, so very deeply.

It’s the longest time and the shortest time.

It’s letting them fall asleep in your arms, whispering heartbeats, taking in every inch of their face.
It’s day care drop offs with a sigh of relief and pick ups where they exclaim to everyone their mummy is here.
It’s where you’re the most important person in the room, it‘s the way their eyes land on you.
It’s wanting to dip your toes into your old life when you need to catch your breath, it’s knowing you’d never change this life for a second, because they are your breath.
It’s the growing within, the growing together.
It’s long days, short years and a million moments that stand still in between, ones I hope I’ll remember forever.

Motherhood isn’t one or the other, it’s a combination of both, a recipe of everything. It’s all encompassing and it’s going so fast.

But right now I get to hold them.
I get to love them.
Right now I get all of them.

For the longest time and the shortest time.
