What’s a Time You Disagreed With a Decision That Was Made at Work?

The ideal anecdote here is one where you handled a disagreement in a professional way and learned something from the experience. Playing particular attention to how you start and end your response. To open, make a short statement to frame the rest of your answer, one that nods at the ultimate takeaway or the reason you’re telling this story. For example: “I learned early on in my professional career that it’s fine to disagree if you can back up your hunches with data.” And to close strong, you can either give a one-sentence summary of your answer (“In short…”) or talk briefly about how what you learned or gained from this experience would help you in the role you’re interviewing for.

What Are Your Greatest Strengths?

Here’s an opening to talk about something that makes you great—and a great fit for this role. When you’re answering this question, think quality, not quantity. In other words, don’t rattle off a list of adjectives. Instead, pick one or a few (depending on the question) specific qualities that are relevant to this position and illustrate them with examples. Stories are always more memorable than generalizations. And if there’s something you were hoping to mention because it makes you a great candidate, but you haven’t had a chance yet, this would be the perfect time.

New interview questions!

What Do You Like Least About Your Job?

Tread carefully here! The last thing you want to do is let your answer devolve into a rant about how terrible your current company is or how much you hate your boss or that one coworker. The easiest way to handle this question with poise is to focus on an opportunity the role you’re interviewing for offers that your current job doesn’t. You can keep the conversation positive and emphasize why you’re so excited about the job.

Daily questions

What is your greatest weakness?
Strengths-and-weaknesses interview questions are a given. You’ll want to use some care when choosing your answering the greatest weakness portion. “So many articles say that you should make your biggest weakness a positive attribute, which is not something I recommend doing,” says Brenda Abdilla, a Denver-based career and leadership coach. “This is not an opportunity to humblebrag.”

At the same time, “you want to be real and truthful about an area of development you truly need, but you want to avoid sharing something that’s serious and going to raise a red flag that you’re not a suitable candidate,” cautions Kathy Caprino Connecticut-based career coach and author of the upcoming book The Most Powerful You: 7 Bravery-Boosting Paths to Career Bliss.

No matter what your answer is, make sure you impress upon the hiring manager that you're taking steps to improve.

How do you deal with conflict with a co-worker?
Disagreements between co-workers are inevitable—but showing prospective employers how you’re equipped to handle them is crucial.

“You want to demonstrate that you have strong listening and communication skills, have compassion and empathy to sit in someone else’s shoes and be understanding, can problem-solve effectively, and can rebuild bridges and restore strong working relationships with others, which is essential to work success,” Caprino advises.

Bad answers:

“My co-worker kept trying to steal credit for my ideas, so I took the issue to my boss to have her intervene.”
“Our personalities clashed, and we fought a lot. I learned that some people just don’t get along.”
Great answers:

“When I have a disagreement with a co-worker, I always pull the person aside and discuss the issue privately. I listen actively to make sure I understand the other person’s point of view, and I work with the person to develop a solution together.”
“I talk a collaborative approach to resolving conflict at work. For example, on at least three occasions, my colleague missed deadlines that pushed back our production schedule. After I discussed this with him, we found a way to improve the workflow system together and prevent that problem in the future.”

The most difficult question in interview.

Have you ever been met?

Tell me about your worst boss.
It can be tempting to trash your former manager, but you need to find a way to put a positive spin on this answer. Leanne King, president and owner of SeeKing HR, suggests talking about what you learned from your worst boss:

“My worst boss ever taught me things like graciousness, the absolute need for technical competency and professional respect -- these are core characteristics to creating high performing teams and areas she may have chosen to improve upon. I learned through a series of very difficult situations that everything about business is personal -- personal to me and certainly personal to her. Speaking to others with kindness and compassion certainly can take you further in your career aspirations. I was inspired to support the people who work for me, raise them up to reach their potential and encourage them to seek greatness.”

How to answer the question when you are in interview?

Tell me about a time when you failed.

No one wins all the time, so the key here is to forthrightly discuss what you learned from a situation that went awry. The interviewer also may want to hear how you handled any resulting fallout.

Failure comes in different forms: taking the wrong action, omission, or not doing enough or taking action soon enough. Some failures are big; most are small. Tell a story that isn't a career killer but shows you learned something substantive. Perhaps you failed to trust your gut on a hire and the person didn't work out, or you didn't intervene early enough with a problem employee. Talk about the lesson you learned from the mistake.

How to answer tough question Why do you want to leave your current position?
The interviewer wants to make sure you won't walk out after six months and that you'll be satisfied in your new position. You have greater market value when you are looking on your own terms. Prepare a positive response you are very comfortable with. Refer to fit, personality issues or new directions. Your goals and readiness for a new kind of role are generally safe terrain. Just be careful to emphasize benefits to the employer, not your personal aspirations.

Tread carefully. You don't want to bad-mouth your current employer or put yourself in a weaker negotiating position. You could say, "Actually, I'm happy doing what I am doing now. But recently I have been keeping my eyes open for other opportunities. I don't need to leave, but for the right opportunity, I would consider it. This opportunity seems to fit the criteria I set out."

How can you respond the tough questions in ?

What is your greatest weakness?
This question is a common one, but Eric Melniczek, a career advisor at HighPoint University Career & Internship Services, points out that interviewers rarely ask whether it is a current flaw. He suggests an answer along these lines:

“In the past, I was unable to meet set deadlines. However, several years ago, I developed a technique where I write down what I plan to accomplish every hour of every day during the workweek and how I spend my time. Over the years, I have noticed that my productivity has improved dramatically utilizing this method. In fact, my work supervisor recently complimented me in a staff meeting with a dozen of my peers for consistently exceeding team and individual expectations as well as managing my time well."

You’ve probably identified a weakness in anticipation of this question. A good answer that shows you’ve solved it can illustrate your problem-solving capabilities.

Once you come face to face with a hiring manager, you’ll probably be expecting the usual job interview questions: Tell me about yourself. Why do you want to work here? Where do you see yourself in five years? But there’s one type of question that can be a bit more challenging, and that’s when the interviewer asks: “Give me an example of a time you did something wrong, and how you handled it?” Another variation of that is the dreaded “greatest weakness” interview question.

The reason these types of difficult interview questions stump candidates is because it’s tough to talk about your biggest flubs and imperfections. You might be wondering if it’s even OK to admit that you’re less-than-perfect. The key is to realize what the interviewer is really asking.

These kinds of questions all have a similar situation. “Whether a recruiter asks you to describe a situation in which you did something wrong, you flat-out failed, or you made an honest mistake, they’re ultimately hoping your answer will shed some light on your sense of judgment, your professionalism, your problem-solving skills, and even your personality,”
