With over 30 online courses available and 10 hands on practical workshops, LearnEM is focused on providing training to health professionals in all regions of Australia. Learn

EM is the work of a team of Emergency Physicians, Rural Practitioners, Emergency Nurses, Paramedics and other Health Professionals. All learning resources are peer reviewed and CPD accredited for medical and nursing clinical practice. What does a FAST scan actually assess?
The FAST examination - Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma - is a rapid bedside ultrasound assessment used in the evaluation of trauma patients.

It focuses on looking for free fluid in key areas:
🔹 Right upper quadrant – around the liver and right kidney
🔹 Left upper quadrant – around the spleen and left kidney
🔹 Pelvis – looking for free fluid in the pelvic cavity
🔹 Pericardium – assessing for pericardial fluid all correct

The extended FAST, or eFAST, adds assessment of the chest for pneumothorax and haemothorax.

One of the great strengths of POCUS is that it can be performed at the bedside and incorporated into the patient's clinical assessment in real time.

💡 In the right clinical setting, even a small amount of free fluid can be an important finding - but a negative FAST doesn't exclude significant injury.

Designed specifically for midwives, this one-day hands-on workshop will build confidence in using Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) for assessment in the third trimester.
