CAMBODIA SERVICE LEARNING | Over 14 days, a team of TCC staff and students travelled to Cambodia for a Service-Learning experience that combined community service, cultural immersion, historical learning, and faith.

Partnering with Camps International, students worked alongside local communities on projects including water storage systems, concrete tile production, and school garden improvements. They also spent time in local schools, building connections through English conversation and cultural exchange.

The trip provided powerful opportunities to learn about Cambodia's history through visits to significant historical sites and conversations with local people whose lives have been shaped by the country's past. Students also gained insight into ongoing recovery efforts, including programs helping to clear unexploded landmines from affected communities.

Beyond the service projects, the team experienced Cambodian culture through local villages and markets, traditional food, wildlife encounters, and visits to places of cultural and historical significance. Many reflected on the warmth, generosity, and resilience of the Cambodian people.

The team had the opportunity to worship at a local church. For Miss Whereat, who had attended a service at the same church several years earlier, one of the most encouraging aspects of the trip was seeing how much the congregation had grown since her last visit. While Christianity remains a minority faith in Cambodia, the team witnessed a church that was thriving and actively serving its community through outreach and ministry.

Through service, reflection, and shared experiences, students returned with broadened perspectives, a deeper appreciation for the opportunities they enjoy, and lasting memories of the people and communities they encountered.

FRENCH BREAKFAST | Year 7 students have been immersing themselves in the language and culture of France. To bring their learning to life, Mrs Graham hosted a delightful French breakfast featuring croissants, cheeses, and fresh fruit.

We hope experiences like these not only bring learning to life and foster a greater enjoyment of the subject, but also to help create the kinds of educational memories that students will carry with them.

VOCAL ENSEMBLE SPECIAL GUEST | Last Wednesday, our Junior Vocal Ensemble and Senior Girls Vocal Ensemble were privileged to participate in a choir masterclass with Tim Wayne-Wright, an internationally respected choral educator and former member of the world-renowned King's Singers.

Brought to Australia by the Australian National Choral Association (Queensland Division), Tim spent several days in Toowoomba working with selected school and community choirs, sharing his expertise in ensemble singing, vocal technique and performance. During his ten years with The King's Singers, he performed around the world, won a Grammy Award as part of the ensemble, and taught hundreds of masterclasses and workshops for choirs internationally.

TCC Vocal Ensembles were blessed to receive positive encouragement and constructive feedback on the pieces they have been preparing this year. Tim challenged them to continue developing their musical gifts and pursuing excellence through the many musical opportunities available to them.

For our vocal ensembles, it was a rare opportunity to learn from a musician who has performed on some of the world's biggest stages and worked with singers across the globe. We are grateful to Tim for the expertise and encouragement he shared with our students.

YEAR 6 MEDIEVAL CELEBRATION & FEAST DAY | Our Year 6 students recently enjoyed their Medieval Celebration & Feast Day, a wonderful culmination of their studies of the Medieval and Renaissance periods.

Throughout the day, students participated in a shared banquet, games, performances, and a variety of engaging activities that brought their classroom learning to life. Students embraced the spirit of the occasion by dressing in Medieval and Renaissance-inspired costumes, with knights, nobles, queens, and peasants helping to create an immersive and festive atmosphere.

The celebration provided students with a memorable and meaningful opportunity to deepen their understanding of this fascinating period of history while enjoying the rich traditions, culture, and community of the day.

HISTORY IN THEIR HANDS | What can a 2,000-year-old coin reveal about politics, leadership, and society? What can fragments of everyday objects teach us about the people who used them?

Year 10 History students recently participated in an incursion facilitated by The University of Queensland's R.D. Milns Antiquities Museum. Professor Alastair Blanshard, Museum Director, spoke with students about the role of competition in Ancient Greek society and how it shaped everything from warfare and politics to the Olympic Games.

Students then engaged in a series of hands-on workshops, handling and investigating ancient Roman coins while applying historical and archaeological skills to date and interpret them. They also took part in a Roman villa artefact challenge, using fragmentary evidence to determine an object's purpose and where it may have been used within a Roman household.

Many students were awestruck by the opportunity to hold artefacts that are nearly 2,000 years old. More than simply bringing history to life, the experience deepened students' understanding of the ancient world and encouraged the curiosity, wonder, and critical thinking that underpin learning at TCC. It also reinforced their study of Classical antiquity and its enduring influence on the modern world.
