Your kids are learning how to handle stress by watching how you handle yours. That's why self-care isn't selfish, it's one of the most powerful things you can model.

Long before children listen to what we say, they copy what we do. If they only ever see us overwhelmed, burnt out and running on empty, they learn that stress is just something you push through. But when they see us rest, set a boundary, ask for help or take a breath, they learn something different.

Every time you look after yourself in front of your kids, you're teaching them to one day look after themselves.

Here's one mistake we all make trying to calm a child down fast that actually drags the meltdown out longer. Raising our voice. And I get it. When you're tired and they're melting down, it's so hard not to match their volume.

But yelling pushes your child further into survival mode. You can hold a calm tone even when you don't feel calm inside, and it helps their body settle sooner.

This isn't about being a parent who never snaps. None of us are. It's just a pause and a softer body before you respond.

A child can sit beside you for weeks holding everything in. Not because they don't want to talk, but because some part of them doesn't feel safe enough yet.

Then something shifts. The safety lands, and that's usually when the real conversations begin, the stuff underneath the behaviour. So if your child isn't opening up, it's often not the conversation that's missing.

It's the safety. Build that first, and you'll be amazed what they trust you with.

Defiance vs a teenager quietly carrying something. They can look identical, and we almost always call it the first one.

Real defiance is pretty clear. They flat out refuse because they think you're being too strict. But when a teen is dealing with friendship dramas or stress at school, it looks the same.

They go quiet, stop talking, pull away from the family. And that reads as attitude. So before you label it, get curious about what's underneath.

That withdrawal isn't always pushing you away. Sometimes it's just not knowing how to let you in.

A lot of kids open up more when they’re side by side, not face to face.

Instead of guessing how your child likes to communicate, try asking them what helps them feel heard and safe.

Your child feels safe enough to be real here and when we honour their communication style, connection becomes so much easier.

When your child says "I don't care," they often care very deeply. "I don't care" is the armour.

For a lot of kids, being vulnerable feels overwhelming, so their brain reaches for defensiveness instead. Saying "yes you do" just makes the armour thicker.

Try this instead: "you don't have to talk about it right now, but sometimes people say they don't care when something feels really big inside." You're leaving the door open without forcing them through it.

And when a child doesn't feel judged, they're far more likely to let you in.

Most of us reach for "go to your room" the second the feelings get big. I did too. But it can quietly teach a child they're only welcome once they've got it together.

The feeling doesn't disappear. They're just having it alone now. So next time, try asking what they need. Some kids genuinely want space, and that's OK. Others need you close.

When they get to choose, the message becomes "you're not too much for me, and I'm not going anywhere."

When your child suddenly argues over tiny things or becomes extra sensitive, it may not be attitude - it may be a nervous system in overload.

Their emotional tank is already low, so small things feel big.

That’s your cue for less talking, softer tone, slower pace.
