This is such an important article for parents and educators.

I remember having my daughter’s eyes checked and being told by an optometrist that my daughter needed behaviour therapy and coloured lenses to correct her visual issues. They said these two things would help her to read! We tried the therapy for 6 months but unsurprisingly, her reading didn’t improve. We went to the opthamologist to test for coloured lenses. Of course they recommended we get them for her. We baulked at the cost and walked away to do our own research. Thankfully I came across the Australian Dyslexia Association and started learning about the science of reading and how the brain learns to read. I began my studies and I taught my daughter to read and spell - all backed by research and science. We’ve never looked back. She’s now successful at school and achieving her dreams.

Dyslexia Awareness month is all about advocating for the 1 in 10 people who have dyslexia. One of the biggest concerns is the lack of training teachers receive at university.
After decades of research and advocacy, changes are being made. We need to make sure our teachers are experts so that no one is left behind!

Code Read is a proactive organisation dedicated to building awareness and advocating for change. Every year they have a Light it Read for Dyslexia campaign. All over Australia landmarks and buildings are lit red through October.
Take a drive along Hervey Bay Eaplanade to see the Avenue of trees lit red from 1-13th October! One of our Read Write Success students has been advocating for dyslexia awareness and is responsible for the light up here in Hervey Bay!
