ILP AI Pulse - TEQSA & adaptive capabilities

Higher Ed regulator, TEQSA, continues to shift the conversation from “how do we stop AI?” to “how do we develop the capabilities students will actually need?” Their latest resource focuses on adaptive capabilities such as: evaluative judgement, critical thinking and ethical reasoning in a gen-AI integrated world.

The Digital Education Council’s 2026 Global Survey (45,000+ responses across 35 countries) found 88% of higher-education students now use AI in their learning. Faculty use sits at 77%, but only 29% of students believe their instructors are equipped to guide them on AI, and just 31% of faculty feel meaningfully involved in institutional AI policy. Assessment guidance remains a major gap.

Quality learning now means preparing graduates who can work with AI, not just avoid it. And universities can’t rely on workplaces to train their new staff on AI. Instead, they realise they must prepare them by integrating these tools into current curricula.

ILP AI Pulse - Major Australian universities are abandoning or heavily restricting AI-detection tools.

This is an interesting turn of events as applications have returned multiple false positives and reliability concerns (especially for non-native English speakers). This has pushed institutions toward redesigned assessments instead, including secure demonstration tasks plus clear AI-use conditions.

Multiple institutions have disabled or banned AI-detection tools (including Turnitin’s feature) after reliability concerns and disproportionate flagging of non-native English speakers. The focus is moving toward redesigned assessments and clearer AI-use labelling (e.g., University of Manchester’s four-tier system: Prohibited / Minimal / Permitted / Integrated).

The University of Sydney’s “two-lane” model is one example gaining attention. Detection is no longer the strategy. Design is. Something L&D professionals should be excited to hear!

ILP AI Pulse

ASQA has released its 5 Principles for the Responsible Use of AI in vocational education and training (VET).

These principles sit under the 2025 Standards for RTOs and give clear guidance on safe, ethical and compliant use of AI across training, assessment and operations without adding new regulatory burden. This is certainly a relief for most training organisations.

Self-assurance questions and case studies are included on their website. Essential reading for every registered training organisation.
