📘 First Nations Education Strategy Launch
We were proud to attend the launch of the First Nations Education Strategy for Catholic Education Diocese of Cairns.
Our Mercy Leader, Mahalia Creek, was honoured to speak at this important event. Mahalia mentioned "As a First Nations student, it has been important to feel that who I am, where I come from and what I bring with me are valued as strengths. When students feel culturally safe, known and respected, we are more confident to participate, take risks and imagine a bigger future for ourselves."
The strategy focuses on making schools culturally safe, welcoming and inclusive for First Nations students. It supports students to grow and succeed in their learning, culture, faith and wellbeing.
Together, we celebrate First Nations cultures, knowledge and perspectives, and continue to build strong partnerships that help every student thrive.

Mount St Bernard College Year 12 graduate Becky Purt is currently studying a Diploma of Nursing through TAFE Queensland and is currently undertaking placement with Queensland Health.
Nursing is a rewarding and meaningful career that provides the opportunity to make a lasting impact on the lives of others. Becky is continuing to live out the Mercy values of compassion, service and care for the community, and we are proud to see another MSB alumni making a difference.

🌟 Australian Olympic Change‑Maker Nomination 🌟
We are incredibly proud to announce that Nemiah Marama has been nominated for the 2026 Australian Olympic Change‑Maker Award.
This prestigious national program recognises young leaders who use sport as a platform to inspire others, promote wellbeing and create positive change within their school and community.
As part of the program, Nemiah will have access to the Change‑Maker Series, featuring inspiring stories from Olympians about leadership, resilience and making a difference through sport. Nominees may also be considered for the Change‑Maker National Summit, where students collaborate with Olympians and contribute ideas to the Australian Olympic Committee.

The Catholic Diocese of Cairns, together with Centacare FNQ and Catholic Education Diocese of Cairns, joins our local Nepalese, Tibetan and Bhutanese communities in prayer and solidarity following the devastating tragedy in Nepal.

For many families across our Diocese, Nepal is more than a distant country. It is the birthplace of parents, grandparents, relatives and friends, and remains deeply connected to their identity and sense of home. As they grieve the loss of loved ones and witness the impact of this disaster from afar, we are called to stand beside them with compassion and hope.

We invite our parishes, schools and wider community to support relief and recovery efforts through one of two donation options:

🎓 QCoal Foundation Scholarship Opportunity
Thinking about university after Year 12? The QCoal Foundation Scholarship could help make that journey a reality.
In partnership with James Cook University (JCU), the scholarship provides $30,000 to support students from regional and remote Queensland who are pursuing tertiary education. Established in 2015, the scholarship helps reduce the financial challenges often associated with relocating for university study.
Eligible students must have completed Year 12 within the past two years, be from a regional or remote Queensland community, and demonstrate an interest in contributing to rural or regional Queensland. The scholarship is open to students commencing first-year studies in any discipline, or first or second-year studies in Geology or Earth Science at eligible JCU campuses.
