Have you started your bushfire prep yet?

In many parts of Victoria, right now is a great time to rake up your piles of leaves into compost heaps while it's still wet. It might not make the most amazing compost (although it can be used selectively), but it's a great way to manage excess fuel on your property.

We have a free download to inspire and inform your bushfire preparations- the Bushfire Safety Primer is and extract from Joan Websters "Essential Bushfire Safety Tips". It's one page of info that could save your life.

Zone 1 - on a balcony?

Growing something, anything, in the space you have can be incredibly satisfying and rewarding.

In "The Earth Restorer's Guide to Permaculture", Rosemary Morrow discusses 'Small Scale Strategies & Techniques' for creating a permaculture garden in your home.

"Consider vertical growing as extremely useful... Various containers such as pots, sack gardens, and old boots, are all useful additions...Trellises across walkways in small gardens and on balconies, provide vertical growing space as well...A big pot can have a dwarf lemon tree, parsley and lettuce or beans as a guild...Quail require little space, give you abundant eggs (300 a laying season), and excellent manure because you keep them on deep straw or other litter...On small balconies in Vietnam, rabbits are kept in a cage over one or two chickens."

Worm farms, aquaponics, hanging baskets, so many possibilities!

'"The Earth Restorer's Guide to Permaculture" by Rosemary Morrow is one of the most comprehensive permaculture texts available, an essential resource for any serious permie. And the illustrations by Rob Allsop like the one above are beautifully executed.
