Today we open the doors of Words in Winter 2026 with heavy hearts.

The world lost Dolly Parton yesterday—a woman whose kindness, generosity and unwavering warmth made her one of the most beloved humans to have ever walked this earth. She was, in every sense of the word, extraordinary.

For those of us who believe in the power of stories and words, her legacy is immeasurable. Through her Imagination Library, Dolly gifted millions of children around the world their first books—a reminder that access to stories can change a life, and that literature belongs to everyone.

As we gather today on Djaara Country to celebrate words in all their forms, we do so with Dolly in our hearts. There could be no more fitting way to begin.

Rest in peace, Dolly.

Claire G. Coleman is arguably one of Australia's greatest dystopian storytellers—and Terra Nullius is the novel that announced her to the world.

Opening as what appears to be a colonial narrative, it pulls the rug from under you in the most extraordinary way. Speculative, precise and utterly confronting, it's the kind of novel that stays with you long after the last page and sparks exactly the conversations book clubs were made for.

We are so excited to welcome Coleman to Words in Winter next week. If you're a fan of her work—or simply a lover of dystopian fiction who wants a deeper insight into the creative mind behind these poignant and thought-provoking novels—grab a ticket to her conversation with poet and critic Thuy On.
