South Australian Space School - National Space Camp

It is with great sadness that we share news of the passing of Mike Roach on 6 April 2026. Mike co-founded the South Australian Space School in 1997, and subsequently also the National Space Camp, and his passion for physics, space and education was responsible for inspiring more than a thousand school students from across South Australia through these programs over nearly 30 years. Many students will remember his signature microgravity demonstrations, and his vast collection of space-themed ties. Mike was also responsible for arranging for many NASA astronauts to participate in the Space School programs as special guests – an unparalleled opportunity for local students. Many of these astronauts came to be firm friends with Mike. Mike was recognised for his commitment to and excellence in science education with the 2005 Prime Minister's Prize for Excellence in Science Teaching in Secondary Schools. Mike taught at Hamilton Secondary College for many years, and in September 2017 the Mike Roach Space Education Centre, a Mars mission simulation facility named in his honour, was officially opened at the school. Mike has left an amazing legacy that will continue to inspire students into the future. We will miss you Mike. Ad astra.
