Mining already feels the pressure of a stretched workforce, and a new research bulletin from the Mining and Automotive Skills Alliance points to part of the reason why: trainers who step into the classroom without real grounding in how adults learn struggle to manage diverse groups, and often leave the role early, which makes the shortage worse (source: https://ausmasa.org.au/news-and-events/research-bulletin-august-2026/).

Most sites already have the right people for this. The leading hands, supervisors and experienced operators who run toolbox talks and coach new starters every week, just without formal facilitation training to match.

The TAESS00021 Facilitation Skill Set gives them that grounding: how adults learn, how to manage a mixed group, and how to keep a session on track, so training under supervision actually works.

Want to build that facilitation capability on your site? Reach out to our team.

The TAESS00019 Assessor Skill Set meets the minimum education requirement for assessors operating without supervision, and it is designed for enterprise and workplace assessors, not only RTO staff. Your internal assessors gain the skills to make defensible judgements and validate them properly, so the paperwork matches the practice.

There is a particular kind of calm that comes from knowing your assessment file would survive anyone opening it, no scrambling required.

If your department needs that internal capability, get in touch to talk through how the TAESS00019 could work for your team.

Australia needs more people willing to teach what they know. Jobs and Skills Australia says the country needs 3,800 additional VET teachers over the next five years, with demand growing by 21 percent by 2033 (https://www.jobsandskills.gov.au/news/vet-workforce-key-solving-many-australias-current-job-shortages).

If you have spent years mastering your trade or profession, the TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment is the qualification that lets you start sharing that knowledge properly, as a qualified trainer and assessor in the VET sector.

There is nothing quite like watching a learner finally get it, especially something that took you years to master yourself. That is a good day at work.

Ready to explore where the TAE40122 could take you? Reach out to our team.

TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment - A students journey 20/07/2026

We recently sat down with one of our tradie graduates to hear about his experience completing the TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.

This video is completely unscripted and definitely not professionally filmed 😁 It is simply a raw and honest conversation about his journey, the challenges and what completing the TAE has meant for him.

I even stepped well outside my comfort zone and attempted the video editing, including removing some colourful language 😂 This is the best I could do!

If you know a tradie who is thinking about completing their TAE and moving into training and assessment, please tag them or share this video with them.

The real barrier no one talks about....

Tradies aren't scared of hard work - they're scared of sitting in front of a laptop. Digital confidence is one of the biggest barriers to getting qualified, and it's completely valid. That's why we work one-on-one with every single student. No complicated platforms where you are left left to figure it out alone. We support you every step of the way

Becoming a trainer and assessor isn't an end-of-career move. A lot of tradies think passing on their skills is something you do when you're done on the tools. That's not the case. You can train and assess part-time alongside your usual business operations, adding a valuable income stream and giving back to the industry while you're still active.

This can be a fantastic way to utilise your experience and knowledge, stay connected to your trade in a new way, and help shape the next generation of tradespeople.

If you are interested in becoming a qualified trainer and assessor, the TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment is the required qualification. It will provide you with the skills to design, deliver, and assess training.

Did you know that the trades are short 16000 carpenters in QLD alone!? This is a shocking stat!

16,000 carpenters are needed before the 2032 Olympics. The tradies are ready to step up but who's going to train them? There's a critical shortage of qualified trainers and assessors across every trade in Australia right now.

Have your tradies ever thought of passing on their skills?

Worried your digital skills are not strong enough for the TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment? For many people it's the confidence around digital skills which holds them back. At HBTA we are different in that we support and mentor you one on one. We work with you and help you to develop these skills as you complete your course work. Please do not let this be a barrier - the sector needs your skills... and besides, this is such a rewarding career. Call 1300 704 742 or email [email protected] to take those next steps.
