Today the budding farmers from the toddler room at Morobe Street childcare helped us set up a beautiful worm farm! 🪱 🏡 The kids learned about what worms can do for our garden and how to make their home nice and cosy and thriving with life. We mixed soaked coir, sawdust, paper shreds, coffee chaff to create a nice comfy habitat for the little wormy guys and we sprinkled some gritty compost on top. The soaked cardboard is to keep the bedding separated from the worm wee compartment :-) We had lots of fun getting our hands dirty in this very sensory activity. It is great to lead Holstep Health collaboration for healthy and active living with our local childcare 🌱🥰

Our volunteer compost legend turned the compost this morning and added some lovely horse manure from our local Equestrian club over in Eaglemont. You know you are a gardener when poo is an exciting topic over your morning coffee at Buna 😅🥹 Compost was hot this morning! 👏👏👏

Thank you thank you thank you to all those who came out today in the chilly wind for Charu Chandiok Singh ‘s fantastic and insightful Dahlia workshop 👏👏👏 at our well loved garden 🥲 thanks to the volunteers and staff from Buna and Holstep Health 🙏 a mammoth thank you to Sustainable Table by Green Karma for the exquisite catering, not only delicious, plant-based, rescued food but all the scraps were composted at Buna or made into soup stock for next time👌 Tell us what sort of workshop you would like next! 😁🌱

Renewed compost bays baby! 🥳🌱

Tucked into a reserve in Heidelberg West, Buna Reserve Community Garden has recently had our compost bays renewed. Before we had three sets of two bays in separate parts of the garden. We now have 6 bays in a row. We have a hot compost system and volunteers, groups and individuals who visit the garden add into the open bay at the end. Our volunteer compost coordinator turns the compost with a fork each week into the bay beside it - for example bay 2 into 3.
Loosely based on the Berkeley Hot Composting method we use all garden waste and turn it into compost material to nurture the soil.
Wood and other parts of the old system were reused into the new structure.
Jen, our compost coordinator, is very pleased that Holstep Health supported the work and we appreciated Humberto for his building skills.
Our video shows the heat coming out while it is being turned.

Buna is open twice a week and welcomes visitors so if you are keen to come for a look please drop in.
