Korowal School Korowal is a progressive, independent K - 12 school, located in the beautiful Blue Mountains. Our core philosophy places the child at the centre of the school.

Korowal inspires compassionate and discerning voices for a sustainable world. Korowal School is vibrant and current - we respond to the changing needs of our society. Following extensive research, consultation and planning, we have prioritised several initiatives to strengthen our students' capacity to thrive now and into the future. To educate is our mission, and education to us is more than exam

ination results. Working to a model that develops the whole person is imperative. Guiding students to understand how they learn most effectively and why learning is important underlies our educational programs. Our school name, 'Korowal', is an aboriginal word meaning 'to stand alone', or 'the strong one'. After 40 years of Korowal's development we are building on our longstanding foundation, as we expand programs and introduce world-class initiatives. We acknowledge and pay out respects to the Dharug and Gundungurra people, the traditional custodians of the land on which our school stands. We pay our respects to elders past, present and emerging.

🏺 STEPPING BACK IN TIME

Year 7 visited the Chau Chak Wing Museum, University of Sydney where a highlight was handling genuine ancient artefacts, from 8,000-year-old Neolithic axe heads to bronze brain hooks used in mummification during Egypt’s New Kingdom period.

Students also explored the Egyptian wing with museum guides, viewing artefacts and asking plenty of questions along the way.

The excursion finished with lunch in the historic Quadrangle and visits to the Museum’s Art Gallery and natural history collection.

Bush School Playgroup at Korowal is a weekly outdoor playgroup for preschool-age children and their parents, held across our beautiful 17-acre bushland campus. Join Luke, Korowal’s Regenerative Practices and Bush School Coordinator, for hands-on bush experiences where children can explore, climb, create, discover and play while connecting with the natural world.

🎨 YEAR 8 AT THE ART GALLERY OF NSW

Year 8 visited the Art Gallery of New South Wales to see the Archibald Portrait Prize after previously investigating the finalists online.

Seeing the portraits in person gave students a completely different view of the works, with many noticing texture, brushstrokes, scale and intricate details they hadn’t picked up on before. Several students even came away with new favourites.

The day also included works from the Wynne and Sulman prizes, Avatar: forms of Vishnu and time to explore other exhibitions throughout the gallery.

🌎 LOOKING BEYOND EARTH

Year 3 has been exploring the central idea, Interactions between the earth and the sun create predictable patterns and cause changes to the earth’s environments.

Their many questions about how the sun creates patterns on Earth led them to look further into what is happening in space. Working in groups, students researched an assigned planet, wrote an information report and then used papier-mâché to create a 3D model.

Together, their planets have formed a class solar system.

♻️ GREENHOUSE FUNDRAISING UPDATE

Our Return and Earn fundraiser has passed the halfway mark, with more than $600 now raised towards our new greenhouse!

Over the holidays, Luke delivered a trailer load of eligible bottles and cans to the Emu Plains Return and Earn Centre, adding an incredible $163 to the total.

Every bottle, can and donation is helping us create a hands-on growing space where students can plant, observe and learn.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed so far. Please keep bringing eligible containers to school, or scan Korowal’s barcode (photo 2) at a Return and Earn machine to donate your refund directly to the greenhouse project.

👨‍🌾 GROWING NUMBERS IN THE FOOD FOREST

Our Food Forest is continuing to grow, with students combining mathematics, regenerative learning and hands-on action to prepare the space for its next stage.

Year 3 students have been working with Nate on a mathematical inquiry called Growing Numbers: Designing Our New Food Forest Space. They have measured the area, explored scale, spacing and layout, and created designs to help shape the future garden.

Students from Kindergarten to Year 10 have also been clearing, digging and preparing the site for new soil and sandstone garden beds. Meanwhile, seeds are being planted, and seedlings nurtured in classrooms, ready for the spring crops.
