We’re so proud of the work of Stephanie Hartono, a third-year professional intern who just completed her time with us at Design Factory Melbourne.
Stephanie is studying a double degree in Games & Interactivity and Animation, and undertook a 12-week professional internship as part of Swinburne University of Technology's Work Integrated Learning toward Moonshot #1: Every Swinburne learner gets a work experience Stephanie was tasked to work on the Victorian Hydrogen Hub (VH2) Project for Swinburne research, and to visualise hydrogen technology in an engaging and visual format. What makes up a typical workday? It can differ vastly from creating new ideas for a program launch to framing customer needs in a compelling way for a project proposal. How can we then make each day as productive as possible?
Over the last two years, we at Design Factory Melbourne have gathered a range of productivity perspectives to the core work we do around innovation. Now, to get 2022 off to a good start, we are launching our Daily Practice of Innovation: Small actions, big shifts book.
This book is a collection of insights and activities to find new perspectives in your daily work. In it, we explore how to set the foundations for a productive day, leverage the most of your time, find opportunities hidden in plain sight, boost energy, and gain new perspectives at work. The activities are brief and require no prior knowledge, so you can jump right into the doing.
We also love to thank Jaiden Gusti, our DFM alumnus, for the design of the book!

As the Covid-19 pandemic has caused global uncertainty and disruption, many organisations may be focusing their efforts on survival. Here at DFM, we are interested in how creativity and innovation can be beneficial in a crisis context. Pauliina Mattila and researchers from Aalto University, Finland, investigated the Covid-19 responses of businesses in Finland's packaged food and beverage industry, and found that through experimentation and the leveraging of new and existing resources, these businesses were able to create new value offerings. These findings challenge the norms of 'playing it safe' and minimising risks in the face of uncertainty, and suggest that when in doubt, entrepreneurs may be well served by action rather than inaction.

It’s ! We are thrilled to be supporting the ANSTO National Science Week Hackathon again this year! Over the next three days, secondary school students will gain experience in science, innovation and entrepreneurship. Students will also gain creative confidence, valuable team-working skills, interviewing skills, experience with online collaboration tools and have a chance to interact with scientists, professionals and entrepreneurs.
Last week, our staff ran a professional development session to equip educators with the tools to foster innovative thinking in their classroom. We have a number of DF alumni involved as Design Thinking Coaches to inspire and guide the students in human-centricity and creative problem-solving. They will mentor teams to test their assumptions, ideate, introduce tools for innovation, and effectively present their solution during the hackathon this week!

Is there a better time than now to illustrate the importance of innovative practices in the face of uncertainty?
The last 18 months have forced a lot of us to take a step back and assess our approach to challenging circumstances.
At DFM, we took this opportunity to embrace resilience and continue to convert our expertise into action. We remained curious and open to new opportunities and experimentation, seeking new ideas from a variety of perspectives. We directed our focus towards the future, imagining the possibilities of inclusive design, design for science and technology and innovation ecosystems.
Our new publication, Re-Think, Re-Frame, Re-Imagine, highlights the different avenues in which we applied this mindset, from our student and industry projects, professional workshops, community-based activities, and our latest research.
