How fantastic is the new Children’s Quarter 📚 !!
The kids and I spent the afternoon reading, pretend-playing, crafting and enjoying the wonderful atmosphere 〰️ the natural light⚡️flooding through the ornate skylight was phenomenal.
With over 4000 children’s books, there’s so much to discover!

We continued our investigation into oil and water by talking about soap 🧼 and how it works. We talked about how soap molecules have an oil loving tail and a water loving head, meaning if soap is added, then oil can be suspended 🦠 in water and rinsed/washed away
In light of this we decided to make some jelly 🍮 soap to take home. We used two simple recipes - one with gelatine and one with carrageenan extract 🥣
Unfortunately the latter recipe didn’t set. This was a great learning experience for the kids and we talked about how experiments don’t always work out and decided to come back next term and see what we could do differently

This week at kinder we made a lava lamp using water, food colouring, oil and aspirin tablets. The kids added glitter for an extra 🌟 effect.
We talked about how water and oil don’t mix, about molecules and polarity, density and weight and why things rise and sink.

At kinder we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the moon landing 🌔 with an easy moon crater experiment. I got the idea from the early childhood booklet.
The children liked dropping different sized ‘asteroids’ on their moon surface and observing the craters formed 🌖. It was messy but oh so fun!

This is true at any age, not only in early childhood, and particularly relevant in today’s classrooms.
