We had Poppy Robert and Nanna Heather visit us for a few days😍

Poppy brought his tractor which meant we could get lots done with the extra horsepower.

💧One big job was moving a 25,000L water tank about 400m uphill from our future house spot. This header tank will sit about 10 metres higher than the house, so will provide good water pressure through gravity.

We didn't quite get the 400 metres of 50mm rural poly pipe buried in the ground. But once it's connected and buried, we will use our fire pump to fill up the tank from one of our big water tanks down the hill.

Eventually we want to get a solar pump which will keep the tank topped up using the sun's energy rather than fossil fuels 🌞⚡

Last week I pruned my First bouquet 💐 from eucys planted as tiny bubs between 2-3 years ago.

The silver princess are showing their minnirichi trunks and silvery branches 😍

So much new growth recently, despite the harsh weather 🙌

The fruit orchard is pumping! This year it's completely covered from the cheeky 28s - so hopefully we'll get lots of juicy stone fruit soon.

The jujube is looking exciting too 😁 this was relocated 2 years ago and has never really seemed interested in producing fruit. There's been a token Jube each year... So to see every branch with flowers and baby jubes starting is very exciting.

Other trees loading up for a good season...

Pomegranates
Quince
Plums
Apples

The 28s have taken a liking to the pineapple sage, basils and surprisingly the Thai chili's.

The pistachio is a gorgeous tree. It seems to just pop back to life overnight with lush big green leaves and cute fruits...

We installed a bunch of wildlife nesting boxes last year, hoping to provide safe and secure nesting hollows for the local wildlife.

We have nesting boxes for bats, parrots, owls, possums and phascogales🦇🦜🦉

This weekend we were checking to see if any had been used, nothing obvious yet, unless you count the 🕷️

We've had a good tip from our local NRM organisation PHCC to put in sheep wool, so will add that soon and see if that helps.

Why did we install these nesting boxes? We only have a handful of trees on Green Duck Farm that are older than 50 years. It can take 100 years or more for good sized nesting hollows to form naturally for larger animals like possums, cockatoos and owls. So by installing these boxes into young trees, we are providing safe and secure nesting spaces that may not exist for another 50 years or more.

We received grant funding from PHCC to purchase these nesting boxes, thanks legends!

Forget about the gym, swinging a scythe is a pretty good way to get the heart rate up😅

And its satisfying when you get in the rhythm. Plus no engine noise or fossil fuel emissions👌

Regular sharpening with the whetstone keeps the scythe cutting cleanly. The cut grass forms a nice mulch layer on the soil, protecting it from the sun's heat, and ideally breaking down to add the carbon and other nutrients back into the soil.

Only a few more acres to go...

An update on the syntropic agroforestry trial plots we planted up with the help of a bunch of friends at the beginning of winter.

The plots are starting to get some nice growth on the planted seedlings and germination of various stone fruit and other useful plants. Very exciting to see some stone fruit has germinated.

If you aren't familiar with syntropic agroforestry/farming, it's basically a method of growing mainly tree crops (though plenty of non tree plants can be incorporated) using a diverse range of plants to support each other and provide various harvest potential over a long time period. E.g. annual vegetables, fruit, nuts, medicine, biomass, timber, fibre at different stages of the systems evolution, all while building healthy soil and ideally a good home for wildlife. It mimics the process of ecosystem succession.

There are heaps of good videos online that explains it more thoroughly. We love the concept and are keen to explore what plants work well in our relatively dry Meditteranean climate (most examples online are in higher rainfall tropical and subtropical climates).

This is one of the best things to happen at Green Duck Farm.

Just knowing that we have Echidna roaming around is bloody sensational

Thanks Martina for capturing this awesome bit of footage!
