Our farm is in the small town of Harvey and sits on the edge of the township. We have the benefit of being connected to the Harvey Water Irrigation Scheme which delivers clean,
pressurised water to farms from Waroona to Dardanup. The soil on our farm is mostly rich loam and has 20%+ organic matter. We are constantly improving our soil by growing mixed green crops cutting them and gently incorporating the mostly legumous ‘green manure’ crops into the soil with a rehabilitator plough which does not turn the soil but rather lifts and incorporates the ‘green manure’ as we call it. The rehabilitator is unique to Bio-Dynamic farming and was developed by Bio-Dynamic farmers and Mike Fix from Fix Engineering in Victoria. The soil is then sprayed with beneficial composting microbes as per the Bio-Dynamic preparations to create what we call ‘sheet compost’ across the entire field. We are endeavouring at our farm to create a cycle where minimal inputs are bought into the farm and maximum nutrients are recycled such as chicken manure is composted, the compost feeds the vegetables and excess vegetables are fed back to the chickens (when our new ones arrive) This is a very simple example. Since purchasing this farm 3 and a half years ago we began the transition to Organic and then Bio Dynamic farming. We previously had a five acre farm to which we grew smaller amounts of produce at. We have put a lot of infrastructure onto our property in aid of our goal ‘To be a prosperous, ethical and quality producer of Chemical Free, Nutrient Dense Certified Bio-Dynamic Produce ‘honest food’ We aim to grow to be an example to all new Organic and Bio-Dynamic growers and to be an indispensable part of the local community food web by producing the absolute best produce we can. We have built cool rooms, 2 shed, put a lot of irrigation in and subsoil drainage, installed a 9kw solar system to off-set our power consumption, built animal yards, many frames for passion fruit and a lot more. We have invested a lot in the organic industry that didn’t come from the organic industry because this is where our hearts are.
