💋 La Bise: The French Kiss That Isn’t Always Romantic

In France, a kiss is not always romantic…
But how many kisses should you give? 👀

🇫🇷 La bise is a traditional French greeting where people kiss each other on the cheek.

The funny part?

👉 The number of kisses changes depending on where you are in France!

💋 1, 2, 3… or even 4 kisses?

In many regions, two kisses are the most common, but some areas have their own traditions.

The number can depend on:
📍 the region
👨‍👩‍👧 family habits
👥 social circles
👵 generations

✨ Fun fact:
French people can sometimes guess where you are from… just by the number of kisses you give!

🇫🇷 Learning French is not only about vocabulary, it’s about understanding the culture behind the language.

A little French-inspired gathering, prepared with love. 🇫🇷✨
Good food, warm conversations, and a table made for sharing, ready for our students to arrive. 🤍

Vin chaud isn’t just a Christmas-market drink for the French, and it certainly isn’t something we drink all winter long! 🇫🇷🍷

But when the evenings are cold, it’s the perfect excuse for a cosy French apéro: warm spiced wine, good company, and plenty of conversation.

We enjoyed it very much tonight with our students, un petit goût de France à partager ❤️✨

👑🇫🇷 Brunehaut: The Forgotten Queen Who Shaped Early France

Long before the kings of Versailles, a powerful woman was influencing the destiny of the Frankish kingdoms…

Born in the 6th century, Brunehaut was a Visigothic princess who became Queen of Austrasia after marrying King Sigebert I. Intelligent, educated, and politically ambitious, she was far more than a royal figurehead, she was a true force in the world of Merovingian politics.

📜 She defended her family’s power, negotiated alliances, supported the construction of roads, and played a major role in governing her kingdom during a time when queens rarely held such influence.

⚔️ But Brunehaut’s life was also marked by one of history’s most famous royal rivalries.

Her greatest enemy was Frédégonde, Queen of Neustria. Their conflict began after the tragic death of Brunehaut’s sister Galswintha and grew into a decades-long struggle between two powerful women and their families.

👑 One queen fought to preserve her dynasty.
⚔️ The other fought to secure her own power.
Together, their rivalry shaped the future of the Frankish kingdoms.

In the end, Brunehaut was captured and executed in 613, but her legacy survived. Today, she remains one of the most fascinating women of early French history, a queen who challenged the limits of her time.

🏰 Gargoyles & Chimeras: The Fantastic Creatures of Notre-Dame 🐉

Did you know that the mysterious creatures decorating Paris’ cathedral do not all serve the same purpose?

Often confused with one another, gargoyles and chimeras actually belong to two very different worlds 👇

💧 Gargoyles: sculptures with a practical purpose
Originally, gargoyles were architectural features. Their main role?
➡️ To carry rainwater away from the cathedral walls through their open mouths, acting like stone water spouts.
Their frightening appearance also gave the building a symbolic and protective presence.

👁️ Chimeras: imaginary creatures and decorative figures
Unlike gargoyles, chimeras have no functional role.
➡️ These fantastic beings, monsters, hybrid animals, and mysterious figures, were created to decorate the cathedral and inspire medieval imagination.

✨ Two sculptures, two stories:
Gargoyles protect the stone from the rain…
Chimeras protect legends from being forgotten.

📍 When visiting Notre-Dame de Paris, look up: every creature tells a piece of the Gothic story.

🇫🇷✨ BON vs BIEN: Two French words that look simple… but learners often mix them up!

Do you know the difference? 🤔

Many French learners confuse bon and bien because they can both translate as “good” in English. The secret is understanding their grammatical role!

✅ BON = ADJECTIVE (adjectif)

An adjective describes a noun (a person, place, or thing).

BON describes the quality of something or someone.

📚 Un bon livre
= A good book

🍰 Ce gâteau est bon !
= This cake is delicious!

👨‍🍳 C’est un bon chef.
= He is a good chef.

👉 BON changes form depending on the noun:

* un bon livre
* une bonne idée
* de bons amis

✅ BIEN = ADVERB (adverbe)

An adverb describes a verb, it tells us how an action is done.

🗣️ Tu parles bien français.
= You speak French well.

🎨 Elle cuisine bien.
= She cooks well.

📖 Il travaille bien.
= He works well.

👉 BIEN does not change form because it describes the action, not a noun.

✨ The easy rule:

BON = adjective → describes a noun
BIEN = adverb → describes a verb

Compare:

🍎 La pomme est bonne.
= The apple is good.

👩‍🍳 Elle cuisine bien.
= She cooks well.

Small grammar difference… big impact! 🇫🇷

🇫🇷✨ A taste of France, one pastry at a time!

This week, our students stepped into the world of French pâtisserie once again, taking on the delicious challenge of creating a Succès Praliné, a classic French dessert that brings together delicate textures and rich praliné flavours. 🌰🍰

With French as their language of the day, our students worked through each stage with curiosity, concentration, and plenty of enthusiasm. From mastering the techniques to assembling their creations, every step was an opportunity to learn, practise, and enjoy the experience.

👩‍🍳 What they experienced:
🇫🇷 Immersing themselves in authentic French pâtisserie techniques
🗣️ Using French naturally throughout the class
🎯 Building confidence, precision, and attention to detail
🌰 Discovering the delicious world of praliné
😊 Learning, creating, and having fun together

And the final result? A beautiful Succès Praliné that looked as impressive as it tasted! ✨🌰🤎

🎶 Indochine: A French Music Legend Across Generations 🇫🇷

Some artists create music… others create memories. ✨

For more than 40 years, Indochine has been part of the soundtrack of French life, bringing together parents, children, and grandchildren through unforgettable songs.

Since their beginnings in the 1980s, Indochine has built a unique universe, mixing rock, new wave, poetry, and powerful emotions. Their music has crossed decades without ever losing its magic.

🎤 From “L’Aventurier” to “J’ai demandé à la lune”, their songs have become more than melodies: they are memories shared by millions.

🌙 What makes Indochine so special?
✨ A connection with several generations of fans
🎸 A unique artistic identity that has evolved with time
🏟️ Legendary concerts that unite thousands of people
❤️ Lyrics that speak about love, dreams, difference, and freedom

As a huge fan, I believe Indochine represents something truly rare: a band that can make someone discover their music today and also bring back memories for someone who listened decades ago.

Indochine is not just a French rock band, it is a part of French culture.

🇫🇷 Learning French is also discovering the artists, songs, and stories that connect generations and shape the identity of a country.

🏰 Guédelon: The Castle Built From the Past

Hidden deep in the forests of Burgundy, France, a medieval dream is slowly coming to life.

Welcome to Guédelon Castle, a unique project where builders, craftsmen, and historians are creating a 13th-century castle using only medieval techniques and materials. 🏰✨

Unlike other castles in France, Guédelon is not a restored ruin… it is being built from scratch, just as it would have been 800 years ago.

🪨 At Guédelon, you can discover:

⚒️ Stone masons shaping local stone by hand.
🌳 Carpenters creating wooden structures using traditional tools.
🔥 Blacksmiths forging the nails and metalwork needed for the castle.
🧺 Medieval craftspeople recreating everyday life from the Middle Ages.

The project began in 1997 with one goal: to understand how medieval castles were truly built, from quarrying the stone to raising the towers.

Walking through Guédelon feels like stepping into a time machine. You can hear the sound of hammers, see ancient skills being revived, and experience history as it happens.

✨ Learning French is also discovering the incredible stories, traditions, and craftsmanship that shaped France.
