Louie Bellson (1924 - 2009)
The Architect of the Double Bass Drum
Long before Heavy Metal, this Big Band jazz drummer designed the "monster" kit.
Biography: A technical wizard who won a Gene Krupa drum contest at age 17, Bellson played for Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman. He was also an accomplished composer.
The Drum Set Innovation: In 1946, while still a young man, Bellson drew a diagram of a drum set with Two Bass Drums. He took the sketch to the Gretsch drum company, who told him it was crazy but built it anyway. Bellson didn't use it for volume; he used it to play rapid-fire rhythms with his feet that matched what his hands were doing. He debuted the kit with Duke Ellington, shocking audiences and creating the first truly symmetrical, modern "double bass" setup.
