This week RIST Trainers Andrea and Brittany enjoyed connecting with Year 7 students at the annual Neil Porter Legacy’s Maths and Science @ Work Expo.
Andrea and Brittany introduced students to the practical application of Maths and Science in agriculture through a hands-on agronomy activity. Students tested and explored soil pH and structure, then applied their mathematical skills to calculate the amount of lime required to correct the most acidic soil sample.
Andrea and Brittany had a great time seeing the students so engaged.
Thank you to the expo organisers, our hosts and approximately 150 students from Timboon P-12 School, Cobden Technical School, Terang College, Hampden Specialist School and Camperdown College at Cobden Tech for participating.
In our experience, the hands-on, practical curriculum offered by the RIST Certificate II and III in Agriculture courses (which are integrated into Year 9+ students’ high school education) help students make the connection between core subjects like maths and science and real-world application and re-engage them with their high school studies.
