Hospitality students serve up a morning tea treat 🍰

Our Certificate II in Hospitality students recently had the privilege of catering a morning tea for around 60 seniors attending a Music Trivia event at the City of Mandurah Seniors Centre.

Guests enjoyed a delicious selection of sweet and savoury treats prepared by the students, including hedgehog slice, lemon slice, mini quiche lorraine, sausage rolls, ANZAC biscuits, coconut biscuits and blueberry muffins.

Experiences like these provide valuable hands-on learning opportunities while allowing students to contribute to the local community. Well done to staff and students.

Local MP visits Halls Head College STEAM Hub πŸ’‘

It was a pleasure to welcome our local Member for Dawesville, Mrs Lisa Munday MLA, to Halls Head College last week.

During her visit, Mrs Munday met with members of our School Board before spending time with students in the STEAM Hub. She spoke with students learning about the immune system, explored the solar system using virtual reality headsets, and saw our 3D printers in action.

Students also showcased their digital media skills, filming and editing a short green screen production, while others demonstrated their welding techniques as part of a project to build a tinny.

We appreciate Mrs Munday taking the time to visit the College. Through her support, the College has received funding for new desktop computers in three classrooms, new carpets in key learning spaces and a school mural, helping to enhance the learning environment for our students.

Training Pathways students explore careers in defence and technology πŸš€

In May, our Training Pathways students attended the Indian Ocean Defence & Security Conference & Exhibition at the Perth Convention Centre.

With heightened security reflecting the significance of the event, the conference brought together senior leaders from government, defence, industry and academia to discuss regional security priorities and global cooperation.

Students had the opportunity to explore career pathways in STEM, trades and advanced technologies, while learning about emerging roles within the defence industry and beyond. They also attended two career presentations, Beyond the Uniform: Cool Careers and My Life in the Navy, gaining valuable insights into the wide range of opportunities available after school.

Students left with a broader understanding of the many career opportunities available in these growing industries.

State Champion to National Competitor! πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸ†

Congratulations to Year 10 student Jasmine, who recently represented Halls Head College at the State Cross Country Championships. Racing against older students in the Year 10–12 division, Jasmine placed an impressive 15th overall.

Crucially, she placed 5th in her own year group, securing automatic qualification for the National Championships in Sydney this September. This remarkable achievement is purely on her own merit, as Jasmine trains without a coach. She is entirely self-motivated, dedicating herself to running every single week.

We are proud of Jasmine’s hard work and superb representation of our college. Please join us in wishing her the absolute best of luck at the Nationals.

Cracking the DNA Vault 🧬

Our Year 10 students put their DNA knowledge and detective skills to the test in a DNA Breakout Box challenge led by Louise Ivey, STEM Outreach Officer from Murdoch University.

Faced with a mysterious box, students worked in teams to solve a series of puzzles and crack the codes needed to unlock each lock. Along the way, they applied their understanding of genetics, tackling questions ranging from "What does DNA stand for?" to exploring how traits such as eye colour are inherited.

The challenge encouraged critical thinking, teamwork and scientific inquiry while bringing classroom learning to life in a fun and engaging way. A big thank you to our staff and Murdoch University for providing this hands-on STEM learning opportunity.

Outdoor Rec Adventures 🌿πŸ₯ΎπŸŒŠ

The Year 12 Outdoor Education Certificate students headed to Margaret River for their final expedition, taking on an unforgettable few days of hiking, camping and adventure. The group hiked from Conto Campground to Redgate Beach, along the Cape to Cape, through the stunning Cape Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park, taking in incredible coastal views along the way.

Day two saw the students head to Gracetown to tackle another section of the Cape to Cape Track before cooling off with a quick swim. The adventure continued underground as students descended 86 metres into Giants Cave, squeezing through tight passageways, climbing ladders and experiencing the famous β€œBallroom” chamber in complete darkness.

Despite constant rain throughout day two, spirits stayed high and complaints were almost non-existent. Students embraced the full outdoor experience by camping under the stars, cooking their own meals, and each night and enjoying plenty of campfire games, laughs and night activities.

Day three the students packed up camp in record time before heading off to explore Canal Rocks. The expedition wrapped up with a swim at Yallingup Aquarium, where only the bravest students took on the chilly water.
