Geography in our own backyard 🌏

Year 11 ATAR Geography students took their learning into the local community with a field trip exploring tourism and sustainability in Mandurah.

The group joined a Mandurah Cruises dolphin tour and visited Mandurah Museum, gathering evidence to support their classroom studies. Along the way, students investigated the role tourism plays in our local area, including how major attractions contribute to Mandurah and the impacts they can have.

The field trip also provided an opportunity to explore the past and future development of the Mandurah foreshore. Students will draw on their observations, interviews and research from the day to assess whether future plans for the area represent a sustainable approach.

A great example of our students using their own community as a classroom.

Unearthing the secrets of ancient Egypt 🏺

Year 10, 11 and 12 students recently attended a fascinating Egyptology lecture with Dr Kate Liszka and Bryan Kraemer from California State University, San Bernardino.

For the past 14 years, the Egyptologists have led an expedition to Wadi el-Hudi in Egypt’s Eastern Desert, investigating ancient settlements and amethyst mines before valuable archaeological evidence is lost.

Dr Liszka and Mr Kraemer shared discoveries from an ancient settlement beside a large amethyst mine. They showed how archaeological evidence can help piece together the past and even challenge long-held ideas about ancient sites.

The lecture directly connected with our senior students’ Ancient History studies while giving students across Years 10 to 12 a rare insight into archaeological research and the many pathways available to those with a passion for history.

The Department of Education WA will also complete a scheduled technology upgrade from Friday 14 to Monday 17 August, affecting College systems including phones and email.

Forensic science in action 🧬

Our Year 9 Criminology students have been getting hands-on with DNA, learning how forensic scientists use it to help investigate and solve crimes.

As part of their latest lesson, students learnt how to extract DNA from kiwi fruit, giving them a practical look at the science behind one of the most important tools in modern forensic investigations.

A great way to bring criminology out of the textbook and into the lab.

Unlocking future careers at Get into Resources 🛠️

Our Year 10, 11, and 12 Training Pathways students recently visited East Perth for the annual Get into Resources event.

Through hands-on workshops, interactive activities, and direct chats with industry experts, students gained incredible insights into future career opportunities in the resources sector.

A massive congratulations to one of our students, who won an all-expenses-paid day trip to a Mineral Resources mine site for themselves and a friend, complete with flights and meals.

Thank you to the Get into Resources team for sponsoring our bus transport and providing delicious morning tea and lunch for everyone. We appreciate your support.

Supporting student health 💙

Our Year 10 students recently participated in the Period Pain and Endometriosis Education Program as part of their Advocacy lesson.

The session helped students better understand menstrual health, recognise the signs that may indicate conditions such as endometriosis, and learn when to seek support. It also encouraged open, respectful conversations that help reduce stigma and build understanding.

At Halls Head College, we believe health education is an important part of preparing young people for life. Programs like this equip students with knowledge, promote empathy and contribute to a supportive and inclusive school community.

Handmade with heart ❤️

Our Year 8 Textiles students have transformed their ideas into colourful animal toys that will bring joy to First Nations children in remote communities this Christmas.

Inspired by the symbolism used in Aboriginal art, each student created an original design before carefully sewing and stuffing their toy by hand. The finished creations will be donated through the Remote Op Shop Project.

A wonderful example of creativity, culture and kindness coming together.

Learning extends beyond the classroom at Halls Head College. 🚀

During the final week of Term 2, our Year 11 and 12 students had the opportunity to complete a range of nationally recognised accredited training, building practical skills that will support future employment, apprenticeships and further study.

Across the week, students completed qualifications including:
• Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA)
• White Card
• Provide First Aid
• Safe Food Handling
• Prepare and Serve Espresso Coffee
• Working Safely at Heights
• Enter and Work in Confined Spaces
• Gas Test Atmospheres
• Skipper's Ticket

These industry-recognised courses provide students with valuable qualifications while they're still at school, helping them graduate with practical experience and a competitive edge as they take their next steps beyond Halls Head College.
