Cutting Edge Innovation

Key members of Halls Head College staff from the Arts, Science, HASS and Technologies areas recently visited Curtin University’s Virtual Reality HIVE hub. Virtual Reality is an exciting and expanding realm of innovative technologies that is being used in more and more areas of the workforce and our College is currently exploring potential areas for use. Our STEM Patron Professor Lyn Beazley was pivotal in establishing this partnership. There are multiple exciting possibilities of introducing additional aspects into our teaching and learning spaces to build on what we have already done in this realm. Exciting times ahead.

Health and Physical Education

Today a group of Year 7-10 girls were treated to a WAFLW Clinic with Peel Thunder League coach Ethan Norris. He was joined by players Jorja Haines, Ellah Haines, Holly Britton, Arianne Norris, Ashlee Norwood as well as AFLW young gun, Jaide Britton, joining us from West Coast. The girls went through a variety of skill activities and ball movement drills. Thank you to the girls coming down and sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm with our lucky students.

Containers for Change

Previously we mentioned an initiative for our students to collect containers from around the College and be in the draw to win one of two prizes. Today we are pleased to announce that two Year 7 students were the lucky draw winners.
Izac Kean and Harrison Nichols won themselves ear pods and a skateboard deck respectively. Izac assured himself of being in the race by collecting an astounding 171 containers!
Mr Collins said he wanted so many of them to win as they had all made such a huge effort to collect the containers, even to removing the lids as the plastic isn't suitable for recycling. He said everyone is a winner for being a part of the clean-up. We think so too.

We look forward to more of the same next year.

A huge thank you to all staff that helped during the recess and lunchtime breaks to add the students to the draw, for encouraging them to keep doing their great work and for prize contributions. More importantly we are all working together to help care for our environment.

Health and Physical Education

On Tuesday 5th of December, Year 9 and 10 AFL Academy students represented Halls Head College in the Boys A Grade, B Grade and Girls Grade at the Peel District Interschool Competition.
All students should be commended for their sportsmanship, behaviour and high level of standards.
Not only did they compete but they helped play for other teams, supported each other, and umpired numerous games during the day.
All teams successfully won their grade and should be super proud of their efforts throughout the competition.

Health and Physical Education

On Monday the Year 9 and 10 Sports Academy Netball students had the opportunity to go to Coastal Lakes College to compete against a number of schools within the Peel region. After competing in over 6 games, all 3 netball teams made it into their respective grand finals. HHC team one successfully won the A division Grand Final against Ridgeview College by 10 points and the HHC team three won the B division Grand Final against Halls Head College team two.

Overall, it was a lovely day, and it was great to see the girls represent the college with care, courage and commitment.

Health and Physical Education

On Monday we had the pleasure of taking a group of Year 10 students to participate in the Peel District Interschool Volleyball competition.
All of the students acquitted themselves superbly, demonstrating outstanding sportsmanship and exhibiting the high level of standards we strive for in our representatives.
Against some very strong opposition, our students held their own and are to be commended on their efforts.
Our students were excellent role models, and I couldn’t be prouder of how they conducted themselves in the community.

Student Services

Halls Head College Year 10 Coordinator, Rhys Lawrie, and Education Assistant Lauren Rees took the Student Leaders to Parliament House last week. After getting some photos in Kings Park the Leaders took a short tour of the Parliamentary House and grounds before being joined by Dawesville local member Lisa Munday. The students enjoyed a three-course lunch which included bottomless soft drink and chocolate lava cake for dessert. They had some great discussions with Lisa about their experience as young leaders and asked some well-considered questions about politics and key issues in the Dawesville region.

Illuminating the possibilities

This week Halls Head College Principal Bronwyn White volunteered to work with a keen group of students from Falcon Primary School on some set pieces for Aladdin.
Aladdin Junior is being performed next week by many very talented Falcon Primary School students under the expert guidance of Mr Abbid Chaudhry, who is the music specialist there. Mrs White shared some tips with the students gleaned from her own volunteer work designing sets and being chief artist for community theatre Stray Cats Theatre Company. The students in quick time delivered six quality panels that will form the backdrop for the talented performers next week.

Christmas Hamper Appeal

This year our staff managed to donate 12 crates worth of various food/snacks to Barefoot Ministries, who will then assemble all donations into hampers for those less fortunate. With the current economic climate there are more families feeling the hardship than ever and this generosity is all the more welcomed. Thank you HHC staff, Flick our wonderful student support officer, and Kerry at Barefoot Ministries for bringing a little joy to someone's life.

Health and Physical Education

Over the past few weeks the AFL academy girls have been participating in the AFLW Eagles SOAR program. The program consisted of over 4 hours of education and practical sessions which were run by Janelle and AFLW star Courtney Rowley. This included information on nutrition, performance, injury prevention and what it's like to be in an elite womens program. The students were lucky enough to earn some awesome prizes including Flying Ryan shirts, Club Polos, Bottles, Hats, Keyrings, a signed Eagles jumper and signed football.
Thank you so much to the West Coast Eagles for providing the program and we can't wait to continue working with them in the Women's football space.

Last week the music students showcased their talents with their instrument and singing abilities. The student year groups ranged from Year 7 through to Year 10. Performing in front of their parents and strangers is always nerve wracking but the students managed to keep their composure and meet the challenge head on.
HHC wish to thank the parents, caregivers, siblings and friends for coming along and being a great supportive audience on the evening.

Health and Physical Education

On 15th November the Year 7 Girls AFL team travelled up to Atwell Reserve to compete in the Lightning Carnival. The girls tried their hearts out and were up against some tough opposition in A division. With many girls trying AFL for the first time the learning experience and fun they had was invaluable. Some top performers from the day included Ellyse Harvey, Georgina Braithwaite, Madelin Inskip and Amelie Reid. The girls were also lucky enough to chat with Aine Tighe and Jess Low from the Fremantle Dockers.

On Monday the 6th, our students participated in a fascinating science project. Through a local ham radio operator based in South Africa they were able to communicate with one of the astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS), Loral O'Hara.

In a brief window of opportunity as it flew from horizon to horizon, the students had a short space of time to ask questions and some even managed to get a second round in before the transmission was lost. All the time we had a live video feed showing the ISS location as it travelled over 28,000kmh and over 400km above the Earth.

We have created a video montage of this event for you to enjoy on our YouTube channel which incorporates the questions, answers and the ISS information better than photos can.

Remembrance Day is Saturday 11th November. Commemorated worldwide, we remember the sacrifice of over 60,000 Australian soldiers that died during the first World War.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

November 3rd is WA Canteen Day and we wish to acknowledge the hard work and dedication our canteen staff put into their food and drink preparation to ensure our staff and students are well fed each day.
When you see them please give them a well deserved thank you.

A selection of Year 9/10 Soccer students participated in a Term 4 soccer match against Darling Range College for the 2nd year running. The game was a close fought match with both teams scoring some great goals and there was some fantastic passages of play on show. Well done to both sets of players in what was a very warm day!

Year 12 leavers dress up day.

Plenty of weird and wonderful outfits were on display today as the Year 12's showed off their creations this morning. The students also marched in their finery to add this penultimate video clip to their presentation for their valedictory evening coming up soon. The video of their beginning and end at the College will be on our YouTube channel after the valedictory evening.
