The HFS Agricultural Learning Centre is Tasmania's largest Field Study Centre that offers a wide range of curriculum linked, hands-on learning experiences, lead by two expert teachers through three themes; Heritage, animals and environment.

🌾 What’s On at the ALC – Term 1, Week 11! 🚜

We’re finishing the term strong with a fantastic mix of programs, partnerships and hands-on learning at the Agricultural Learning Centre.

🌱 Growing the Future
We’re excited to welcome students from Oatlands District High School as they take part in our Growing the Future program, building knowledge and skills across modern agriculture.

🥩 Meat Tech Futures
ALC staff are proud to be supporting the Meat Tech Futures program in partnership with integratedSTEM, Australian Meat Processor Corporation and Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture.
This innovative program gives students insight into the science, technology and careers behind the red meat industry, showcasing cutting-edge practices and future pathways in agriculture.

🌱 Growing the Future
We’re also looking forward to welcoming Year 5/6 students from Mole Creek Primary School for a day of hands-on agricultural learning and exploration.

🐄 Agriculture Excursion
To round out the week, we’ll host Youngtown Primary School for an engaging farm excursion, connecting classroom learning to real-world agriculture.

We’re heading towards the Easter break with a fantastic week of excursions, training and hands-on learning at the Agricultural Learning Centre.

We’re excited to welcome:

🐄 Youngtown Primary School
Students will visit the ALC for an agriculture excursion, exploring farm life and building their understanding of where food and fibre come from.

🚜 Tas TAFE Tractor Training
A great opportunity for participants to develop practical machinery skills and safe tractor operation.

🌱 Hagley Farm School
Our youngest learners will enjoy a fun and engaging introduction to agriculture through hands-on activities around the farm.

🐣 Evandale Primary School
Kinder students will explore the ALC through interactive, age-appropriate farm experiences—sure to spark curiosity and excitement!

It’s a full week of Growing the Future at the ALC, with students from across the region getting hands-on with modern agriculture.

We’re excited to welcome:
• Year 7/8 – Cressy District High School
• Year 8 – Queechy High School
• Year 7 – Kings Meadows High School

Students will take part in a range of engaging, real-world agricultural activities, including:

🌾 Fertilisers & Soil Health
Exploring fertilisers and the role of key macro nutrients N, P, K, alongside how worm farms turn waste into valuable bio-fertiliser.

🚁 Drone Demonstration
Seeing how emerging technology is being used in agriculture for monitoring and decision-making.

🌦️ Ag Logic Weather Station
Understanding how weather data supports farm planning and improves on-farm decisions.

🐄 Beef Production & Technology
Learning about NLIS and traceability systems, and getting hands-on with cattle management in the stockyards.

🌾 What’s On at the ALC – Week 7! 🚜

It’s shaping up to be another great week at the Agricultural Learning Centre with camps, excursions and a special community visit.

🎒Camp: The Hutchins School – Year 11/12
We’re excited to welcome senior students from The Hutchins School to the ALC for a hands-on camp focused on the practical components of Certificate I in Agriculture.

Students will be working on:
• Biosecurity practices on farms
• Working in the agriculture industry
• Livestock management skills

A highlight will be a session with Tom Killalea from Muirs.Tas who will speak about:
• The importance of biosecurity as an agronomist
• Career pathways in agronomy and the agricultural industry

🐄 Agriculture Excursion – Hagley Primary School (Year 1/2 C & D)
We’re also looking forward to welcoming younger learners from Hagley Farm School for a farm excursion where they’ll explore agriculture and learn more about where food and fibre come from.

🚴 Tour de Cure Pit Stop
The ALC & Hagley Farm School will host a Tour de Cure Australia pit stop as riders travel through the region. Tour de Cure is a national cycling initiative that raises funds for cancer research, prevention and support programs across Australia. Riders cover thousands of kilometres, stopping in communities along the way to raise awareness and support life-changing cancer research.

Another fantastic week connecting students, industry and community through agriculture. 🌱

🌱 Growing the Future – Student Experience at Hagley Agricultural Learning Centre 🌱

Give your students the chance to explore the future of farming through hands-on learning in innovation, sustainability, technology and agricultural careers. Students in Years 5–12 can engage in real agricultural experiences including livestock data collection, weather technology, Trees on Farms and more.

Term 1
• Week 8 – 24 March
• Week 10 – 17 April

Term 2
• Week 4 – 25, 27 & 28 May

Term 3
• Week 9 – 21, 22, 24 & 25 September

Term 4
• Week 7 – 1, 2, 3 & 4 December

💰 Great news for DECYP schools:
✔️ No program cost to attend at Hagley Agricultural Centre during advertised dates
✔️ $700 bus subsidy provided to participating schools (paid through the DECYP finance system after the event)

🌿 Camp Week at the ALC! 🚜✨

This week we’re delighted to welcome Year 5 students from St. Therese's Catholic School Moonah for an exciting camp experience at the Agricultural Learning Centre! 🎒🐄

Throughout the camp, students will be immersed in hands-on learning with activities designed to build curiosity, confidence and connection to the natural world. From farm skills to outdoor exploration, it’s going to be a fantastic few days of discovery!

At the start of the week, our dedicated ALC staff will be taking part in Professional Learning with the Field Study Centre Working Group — strengthening collaboration and sharing best practice in experiential learning. 💡📚

🌍 What are Field Study Centres?
Field Study Centres are specialist learning hubs across Tasmania that offer immersive, curriculum-linked experiences beyond the classroom. They give students access to unique environments, expert educators, and hands-on activities that connect learning to real-world contexts.

Tasmania’s five Field Study Centres include:
• Hagley Farm School Agricultural Learning Centre – a working farm with heritage, animal and environment learning.
• Molesworth Environment Centre – nature-based programs and team-building in the Molesworth Valley.
• Mount Cameron Field Study Centre – outdoor education and adventure activities in the north-east bush.
• Sustainability Learning Centre – innovative sustainability programs on and off site.
• Woodbridge School Marine Discovery Centre – marine exploration with touch tanks and shore-based learning.

🚜 Exeter High School – Tractor & ATV Training Camp
In collaboration with Tas TAFE, students will be developing safe and responsible machinery operation skills as part of their Certificate II training program.

🌾 A Big Week of Learning at the ALC! 🐄🚜🐛

We’re thrilled to welcome Hagley Launch into Learning, Kinders from Glen Dhu Primary School , Year 1/2 students from John Calvin School, and members of the Home School Community to the ALC this week!

Our youngest agricultural explorers will be getting hands-on with a range of fun and engaging activities, including:

🐣 Discovering living things on a farm
🥚 Learning about egg production
🧈 Making their own butter
🪱 Exploring vermiculture and the important role worms play
🌳 Understanding the value of trees on farms
🐄 Getting an introduction to cattle management
🚜 Enjoying a tractor ride around the farm

We can’t wait to see the excitement, curiosity, and big smiles as students dive into the world of agriculture. The future of farming starts with sparks of interest like these! ✨
