Well...property is cleared of materials, sticks had already been picked, arena cleared of rails and obstacles, clubhouse prepped for water runoff, leather items put away, horses moved to big paddocks, horses tagged, water reserves ready, bales out in open areas, and kayaks ready for feeds tomorrow (haha, not! ) But... It appears that this may be be an awesome practice run of our processes, as it has moved south a bit! Hoping it is going to hit on vacant land...
Hi, just a quick note to those who have horses with us and may be concerned.
A cyclone is possible, and when we are formally advised to prepare we will be doing the following:
All horses will have yellow tags put in tails
All water buckets removed from paddocks
Sticks and unstable trees have been cleared for most paddocks already (glad we did that job already!)
All arena equipment secured under grandstands
All rugs and flymasks removed
Owners will be advised to take any leather saddles etc home as mould sets in quickly with such an amount of moisture in the air
Feeds will be prepared, and delivered to horses as close as possible prior to it hitting so they have energy to stay warm.
All property access will be restricted to
a) prevent injury to guests
b) prevent bogging, and avoid soft spots that may show up with so much rain
Horses will either remain in current paddocks, or put with a buddy horse they get along with. The property is 100 acres and paddocks are inside the perimeter fencing, and block we ride on is also perimeter fenced.
The horses normally will just stand with butt to the storm and wait it out.
We do keep an eye on them and venture out to check as often as possible.
If the time comes and anyone wants to help, we welcome assistance in tagging, unrugging and picking up water bins :)
It's hard, but try not to worry, horses are very smart and have natural instincts for bad weather. If you have any questions feel free to let me know, thanks :)
