Year 5 Discover the Gold Mining History of Gympie

As part of our Year 5 HASS learning, students have been investigating significant past developments, events, individuals and groups that have influenced the development of law and democracy in Australia, including the Eureka Stockade and the role of Peter Lalor.

Living in Gympie provided us with a wonderful opportunity to connect this learning to our own local history. We visited the Gympie Gold Mining and Historical Museum to discover how the discovery of gold shaped the development of our town and contributed to Gympie’s important place in Queensland’s history.
Students explored the museum’s fascinating collection and discovered much more about life in the past. They investigated displays featuring precious gems, early 1900s classrooms, technology such as radios and telephones, printing presses and the history of Scouting. There was even a very special surprise when our students found the picture of one of their teachers in the Scouting Museum.

However, the highlight for many students was undoubtedly the opportunity to pan for gold. Students eagerly tried their luck, carefully swirling the water and searching for those precious little flecks of gold. Their excitement was contagious!

The excursion gave students the opportunity to see, touch and experience history in a way that brought our classroom learning to life. It helped them understand how significant events such as the discovery of gold can influence the development of a community and shape the place we call home.

A huge thank you to the Gympie Gold Mining and Historical Museum and their wonderful volunteers for welcoming us, sharing their knowledge and assisting our students throughout the day. We had a fantastic time learning about Gympie’s rich history and creating some golden memories along the way!
