Did you know? Defensive driving isn’t all about reacting faster — it’s also about giving your brain time to make the safer choice.

More time and space = less panic, more control.

If you can see a hazard earlier, have more space to respond to it, and make deliberate, not panicked decisions, you’ll have a much better chance of avoiding serious incidents.

We can teach you proven techniques to increase your time and space when driving!

⚠️ Your car's warning systems are a backup plan, not a replacement for looking.
Blind spot monitoring, lane change alerts and rear cross-traffic warnings are impressive tech. But they're not perfect.

Depending on the vehicle, sensors can sometimes struggle to detect:
• Motorcycles
• Fast-approaching vehicles
• Vehicles cutting across multiple lanes
• Complicated lane markings
• Trailers, caravans or other loads

They may fail:
• On curves
• In low visibility conditions like rain
• With sun glare
• With sensor damage
• With a build up of mud, dust, insects or road grime.

A warning light that doesn't come on doesn't automatically mean it's safe to move.

Before changing lanes or overtaking, use the full sequence:
1. Mirrors
2. Indicator
3. Blind spots/shoulder check
➡️ Move only when you’re sure it’s clear

Technology can assist your decision-making, but it should never make the decision for you.

The safest drivers use every tool available — most importantly, their eyes and ears.

Myth: My car has a 5-star safety rating, so it's safe.
Reality: Safety ratings don't prevent crashes.

Research suggests human error contributes to more than 90% of road crashes. The vehicle's safety systems may help protect you or reduce injury severity when things go wrong, but they can't identify all the hazards, or make good decisions on your behalf.

The most important safety feature in any vehicle is still a well educated driver.

A safer car can help protect you in a crash.

A defensive driver can help prevent one.

For generations, drivers have subconsciously used engine noise as a source of information. We hear the engine revving, we hear the vehicle working harder, and we often hear changes in speed before we consciously notice them.

Electric vehicles remove much of that feedback.

The result? It's easier to find yourself travelling faster than intended, particularly on open roads where the cabin is already quiet and comfortable.

Some strategies to help stay aware:
- Check your speed more frequently than you think you need to.
- Regularly scan mirrors to maintain situational awareness.
- Notice how quickly roadside objects are approaching and passing.
- Be extra mindful in school zones and lower speed environments.
- Use cruise control where appropriate.

If you can't see the truck driver's mirrors, they probably can't see you.

Heavy vehicles have significant blind spots around the front, sides and rear. In some positions an entire car can disappear from a truck driver's view.

This becomes especially important when:
• Overtaking a truck
• Merging near a truck
• Stopping or slowing directly in front of a truck
• Travelling alongside a truck at intersections or roundabouts

Remember, truck drivers can't avoid hazards they can't see.

Giving heavy vehicles plenty of space, avoiding lingering beside them, and making your movements predictable significantly reduces risks.

The goal isn't just to see the truck. It's to make sure the truck can see you

WE’VE BIN ROBBED!
Someone recently decided they needed Roadcraft’s paper hand-towel bin and soap dispenser more than we did.
They took the soap, made a clean getaway and left no fingerprints (presumably because they now have plenty of soap).
We have to hand it to them: stealing bathroom accessories is certainly an unusual way to clean up your act.
In the meantime, please keep an eye out for the pictured car or anyone undertaking a suspiciously low-budget bathroom renovation.

We’re temporarily closing the Roadcraft Bike Track on August 14th, so concreting can be done for the new picnic tables and chairs. The project is nearing completion, and we can’t wait to show you the finished shelter and picnic area soon.

Our public Kids' Bike Track is open for everyone to enjoy most of the time, but there are occasions when it is unavailable due to school programs, maintenance, or exclusive private bookings.
