The research is clear 📚 reading aloud is one of the most powerful things we can do for our children.

When we read with a child, we’re doing far more than sharing a story. We’re building the foundations for language, confidence, curiosity and a lifelong love of learning.

Decades of research shows that children who are read to regularly:

💛 Build stronger language skills
Hearing rich varied language in books exposes children to far more words than everyday conversation alone. This growing vocabulary helps them understand, communicate and make sense of the world.

💛 Develop early literacy skills long before they learn to read
Through stories, children learn how books work – that print carries meaning, that pages turn left to right, and that stories have a beginning, middle and end. These early understandings make learning to read feel familiar and exciting.

💛 Strengthen phonological awareness
Rhymes, rhythms and playful sounds help children hear the building blocks of language.

💛 Grow their comprehension and thinking skills
Talking together about a story, predicting what might happen, wondering how a character feels, and connecting events to real life helps children develop memory, problem-solving, and higher-order thinking.

💛 Experience connection, comfort and joy
Shared reading fosters calmness, closeness, and moments of joint attention. These warm interactions support a child's sense of security and belonging.

Most importantly, children who experience positive, engaging reading moments from a young age are more likely to develop a genuine love of books - something that matters even more than early literacy skills alone.

Reading is simple, joyful, and sets children up for success in school and life.

This month we were privileged to welcome some special visitors from Wade High School to our service for a combined recognition of National Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC week.

The children were mesmerised by the language, dancing and music that the group shared with them and many joined in and participated in the dance.

We thank the dancers, the school and those who organised this truly wonderful morning for our children and staff to experience.

Today, our Aboriginal Dance Group proudly headed to Goodstart Early Learning Coolah Street to celebrate Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC Week.

We’re often asked what being not-for-profit really means for our families.

Simply put, it means that our purpose always comes before profit. Every dollar we make is reinvested back into our centres, to provide children with enriching and safe learning environments.

We understand how important it is for children to be in a place where they feel safe and settled. And when families need to make a change - planned or unexpected - we’re here to help make that transition easier.

We’re here to support families when it matters most – because every child deserves a Goodstart! ✨

We are always so proud of our children and educators who share a love of learning! ❤️

Every year we make the journey to the Cenotaph in Memorial Park to lay a handmade wreath of poppies and to engage in storytime with Michael. We are thankful for this support in our learning journey.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Lest we forget.

We recently launched our Book Swap in the foyer and so far this has been a huge success! Lots of children and families have been taking home books to read and share especially as a new bedtime routine! A special thank you to all the families and community members who have contributed to our book collection to share. We value your input and support!

To continue on our focus of supporting to expand language and literacy experiences for all children within our service, we are now teaming with Griffith City Library! Each child is receiving a '1000 Books before School' library tote bag! (These are pictured below).

Inside in each bag, there is a brochure about the 1000 Books before School initiative organised by the Western Riverina Libraries. You can register your child into the program and log their books. It is free to register.

Every book your child reads or listens to counts!

Thank you Griffith City Library for your continued support!

Today we launch our new Goodstart Griffith Coolah Street Book Swap!

We invite all children, families, staff team, visitors and the wider to community to participate!

Donate a book or take a book….

Reading encourages imagination, creativity, and a love for learning.

It also enhances cognitive skills as well as lifelong literacy and numeracy outcomes.

A book swap is an eco-friendly, cost-effective, and social way to exchange pre-loved books with others. It provides an inexpensive way for people to exchange books, find out about new books and obtain a new book to read without having to pay.

Happy reading!
