On Christmas Day, Davis Lausii slept in a park in country New South Wales.

The Tongan mechanic had arrived in Australia under the federal government's Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme and was recovering from a serious workplace injury, leaving him unable to work for months.

Griffith’s local Indian 🇮🇳 community celebrated India’s Independence Day for 2026. It is celebrated every year on 15 August. It marks the day in 1947 when India gained independence from British rule after nearly two centuries of colonial governance.

Key facts:
* Date: 15 August
* First Independence Day: 15 August 1947
* First Prime Minister: Jawaharlal Nehru
* Historic event: Nehru delivered his famous “Tryst with Destiny” speech on the eve of independence.

Significance
Independence Day commemorates the courage and sacrifices of countless freedom fighters, including leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Subhas Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, and many others. It is a day to celebrate India’s unity, diversity, democracy, and progress.
