Western Riverina Community School Engaging co-ed learning opportunities for students in years 9 to 12.

Opening in 2018, WRCS is a co-educational high school providing affordable, engaging learning opportunities for students in years 9 & 10. WRCS will teach the NSW school syllabus in an alternative educational model for young people, where the mainstream school environment has not catered to their individual needs.

Our ๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ฒ ๐Ÿฒ ๐—”๐—ด๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐˜‚๐—น๐˜๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฒ students traded the classroom for the paddock with a hands-on visit to a commercial farm out at Weethalle.

The group got a front-row look at live shearing operations, learning about wool classing, fleece handling, and the shed management required during peak season. They also surveyed a variety of broadacre crops, examining growth stages, soil health, and local crop rotation strategies firsthand.

A massive ๐™ฉ๐™๐™–๐™ฃ๐™  ๐™ฎ๐™ค๐™ช ๐™ฉ๐™ค ๐™‹๐™–๐™ช๐™ก ๐™ˆ๐™˜๐™†๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™ฃ๐™ค๐™ฃ for welcoming our students, sharing his expertise, and giving us a real-world look at modern farming in action. The students are looking forward to returning during the November harvest period.

As part of our curriculum, students explored First Nations perspectives through a hands-on raffia wall art activity. The experience provided an opportunity to learn about the importance of connection to Country and culture while developing creativity and an appreciation for the richness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.

Desma Newman, member of the Griffith Local Aboriginal Land Council Board, and Steven Young, CEO of Griffith Local Aboriginal Land Council gave WRCS a walk through their office and hall with a presentation on how and when the GLALC was started, and showing artefacts that were found at Griffith Base Hospital. They also had a showing of an illustrated book called โ€œCocoparra National Park Walking Track Project".

Kerry and Rayma Johnson came to WRCS and students participated in a cultural dance workshop โ€“ โ€˜Windirraโ€™- To Stand In Oneโ€™s Light. Thank you Kerry and Rayma for helping them shine.

During ๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—ช๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ธ, our Stage 6 Aboriginal Studies students explored the significance of ๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—ผ ๐——๐—ฎ๐˜† and the impact of Eddie Mabo's fight for land rights and justice.

Students also investigated the importance of ๐—ก๐—”๐—œ๐——๐—ข๐—– ๐—ช๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ธ and how it celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories, achievements, and identities. Through research and class discussions, students reflected on the importance of culture, community, and connection to Country.

We are proud of the thoughtful learning and discussions that took place throughout the week.
