There comes a point in martial arts when something changes.

You stop asking:

“Am I doing this exactly the way Coach showed me?”

And start asking:

“How can I make this work for me?”

That’s where learning gets interesting.

Two students can learn the same technique and produce completely different results.

Different bodies…
Different timing…
Different instincts…
Different ways of seeing the moment…

That’s not getting it wrong.

That’s the beginning of making the art your own.

Learn the technique…
Understand the principle…
Then find your own expression…

That’s when training becomes more than repetition.

It becomes a conversation between you, your training partner, and the moment.

A Lesson From 26 Years of coaching on the Mat

Early in my coaching career, I thought my job was to build tough kids.

Tougher than the bullies. Tougher than whatever hard thing life would eventually throw at them.

It took me a lot of years to understand I had it slightly wrong.

The toughest students I have coached were rarely the ones who could hit hardest or grapple longest. They were the ones who could get back up quickly after a bad round, a lost match, or a hard week, and come back to training anyway.

That is not toughness in the way most people picture it. It is something more useful. It is the ability to return.

I watch it happen in real time on the mat most weeks. A kid gets tapped three times in a row and their shoulders drop. Then, without anyone telling them to, they line back up for round four.

Nobody taught them to do that in a lecture. They built it, rep by rep, class by class, over months of showing up.

That is the part of martial arts I care most about passing on. Not the technique, although the technique matters. The willingness to keep returning to the mat, and to themselves, no matter what the last round looked like.

Twenty six years in, that is still the best thing I get to teach.

If you want your child learning that lesson early, come and see a class for yourself.

5 Signs Your Child Could Benefit From Martial Arts..

Parents ask me some version of this question most weeks. How do I know if martial arts is right for my kid?

After 26 years of coaching children from age four upward, here is what I tell them.

You do not need a confident child to start. You do not need an athletic one either. Some of our strongest students walked in quiet, unsure, and hanging back near the door on day one.

What I look for instead is this.

They struggle to sit still or focus for long periods. Movement gives a busy mind somewhere to go.

They are easily discouraged when something does not come naturally straight away. The belt system teaches that progress is slow and that is completely normal.

They are shy around new people or new environments. A good class is structured enough to feel safe while still asking them to step slightly outside their comfort zone, every single session.

They have big energy and nowhere to put it. Training gives that energy a direction instead of a battleground.

They have never been asked to fail in front of others and get back up. Martial arts makes that a normal, expected part of every class, not a big deal.

None of these are problems to fix. They are simply starting points. The mat works with whatever a child brings through the door.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has a way of changing the way you think.

On the surface, it teaches grappling and self-defence.

Underneath, it teaches patience, problem solving, resilience, and staying calm when life applies pressure.

Every roll is an opportunity to learn.
Every challenge is an opportunity to grow.

That’s why the lessons from the mats often become lessons for life.

Come and experience Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for yourself.

Jiu Jitsu teaches a simple lesson:

Don’t panic. Think.

When things get tough, the answer isn’t always more strength…
Sometimes it’s better timing…
Better technique…
A better decision…

The mats become a classroom where students learn patience, problem-solving, and composure under pressure.

Skills that work just as well in life as they do in Jiu Jitsu.
