What a fantastic carnival for the NSW All Schools Girls U/18s Rugby Sevens Team!

We finished 4th out of 10 teams, which was a fantastic result and a great reflection of the team’s hard work, determination and commitment.

The Rivers Open Boys Baseball Marches Into the NSWCHS State Semi-Finals!

Today, The Rivers Secondary College Open Boys Baseball team faced a familiar and formidable opponent in Muirfield High School. Having travelled up from Sydney, Muirfield were a team we knew well — they were the side that knocked us out of the NSWCHS State Competition last year, so we knew we would need to be at our best.

The Rivers came out firing, with Corey taking the mound and dominating the opening innings, needing just 10 pitches to get through the first. Early hits from Kye, Corey, Cooper and Charlie helped The Rivers jump out to a 3–0 lead.

Muirfield fought back in the fourth inning, capitalising on an error to bring the scores back to 3–2 and put the pressure on.

Charlie then took over on the mound and delivered an outstanding performance, throwing strike after strike and allowing just one hit. In the fifth inning, a walk, an error and another clutch hit from Cooper helped The Rivers extend their lead to 5–3.

With the game on the line, Kye stepped up to close it out, retiring the final four batters and securing a huge 5–3 victory!

This win sends The Rivers through to the NSWCHS State Semi-Finals, where we will travel to Sydney to take on either Hills Sports High School or Endeavour High School.

This marks the third time The Rivers have reached the State Semi-Finals, having previously gone all the way to become State Champions in 2019.

With such a young and talented squad, this team is only going to get stronger. Could this be the year The Rivers reclaim the NSWCHS State Championship?

A huge congratulations to Elorah from The Rivers Secondary College, Lismore High Campus, who proudly performed the Australian National Anthem at the School Sport Australia National Rugby League Championships! 🏉🎶👏

The championships were recently held in Ballina and hosted by the NSW Primary Schools Sports Association. 💙✨

The Rivers Secondary College Open Girls Football Team’s incredible NSWCHS campaign came to an end last Monday, going down 2–0 to Northern Beaches Secondary College Mackellar Girls Campus at Cromer Park.

Finishing in the top eight schoolgirl football teams in New South Wales is an outstanding achievement and a moment this group will never forget. The girls showed enormous courage, teamwork and determination throughout their historic cup run and represented The Rivers Secondary College with pride every step of the way.

Dear parents and carers,

As you may be aware, a student protest group is encouraging students across the country to stage a ‘walk-out’ this Thursday 13 August to protest against politician Pauline Hanson.

This protest is not sanctioned by the NSW Department of Education.

NSW public schools are apolitical and non-partisan places where the focus is on teaching, learning and student wellbeing. Schools are expected to provide safe, respectful and inclusive learning environments for every student, regardless of their background, beliefs or views.

Students are expected to attend school on Thursday as normal. Cases of non-attendance will be treated in the same way any absence is treated.

Students are expected to comply with school behaviour expectations and departmental policies while at school. Any behaviour that disrupts teaching and learning or threatens the safety and wellbeing of students or staff, will be managed in line with departmental procedures.

Rivers College Open Girls Tennis Team Finishes 8th in NSW

The Rivers College Open Girls Tennis team recently travelled to Forster to contest the NSW State Finals over three days in beautiful conditions.

The girls qualified for the 10-team finals series after winning all of their lead-up matches:

Round 1: Bye (based on last year's strong showing)
Round 2: Defeated Maclean HS (8 sets to 0)
Round 3: Defeated Alstonville HS (5 sets to 3)
Round 4: Defeated Mullumbimby HS (6 sets to 0)
Round 5: Defeated Camden Haven HS (5 sets to 1) to become North Coast Area Champions.

This was an especially satisfying victory after last year's heartbreaking North Coast Area Final loss to Toormina HS, the closest result imaginable. The match finished four sets all, but we lost on countback of individual games, 34–33.

After arriving in Forster following a five-hour drive, the girls were put through a punishing (their words, not mine!) training session on Monday afternoon to stretch the legs and arms after the long trip, while also working on a few strategic issues in preparation for the days ahead.

Round 6

Our first match at the State Finals was against Narrabri HS, which also seemed to double as a Magner family reunion, with the parents of three of our girls having grown up there.

All four girls played solid tennis, combined exceptionally well, and recorded a convincing 8 sets to 0 victory to move into the final eight teams in the state.

Round 7

Next up was Endeavour Sports HS, one of the strongest tennis schools in NSW for many years. (They were actually locked at three sets all in the Gold Medal match against Westfields Sports HS when we departed.)

After waiting several hours for Endeavour to arrive, play finally got underway. It quickly became obvious that our girls were in for a very tough battle. Although we eventually lost 5 sets to 1, every player competed fiercely, with many long, hard-fought rallies.

A special mention must go to DjiDji, who defeated Endeavour's Number 1 player despite her opponent having a significantly higher UTR ranking (UTR, not UTI, Isabella!). It was an incredibly gutsy performance from our little pocket rocket.

The loss placed Rivers into the Plate Finals Series for teams ranked 5th to 8th.

Our next opponents were Kiama HS.

I would be stretching the truth if I said the girls were feeling fresh and ready to rumble after already playing two demanding matches that day. Nevertheless, they all gave it another red-hot crack.

The tie was always likely to be close, and it certainly lived up to expectations. Every girl gave everything she had left in the tank, but eventually Kiama, who had only played one match earlier that day, prevailed 5 sets to 3.

The result honestly could have gone either way, with all four girls again producing some tremendous tennis.

A special mention goes to our Number 2 veteran, Lara, who defeated Kiama's Number 2 player 7–6 in an epic tiebreak set, giving her mum and grandparents what I'm sure felt like a minor nervous breakdown.

What a huge day it was, both physically and mentally.

Final Playoff

The girls turned up the following morning with more aches and pains than their coach, Mr Dalli—which really takes some doing!

They were also thrilled with the 8:00 am start for our final match, a playoff for 7th and 8th against Great Lakes College.

After complaining all the way through the warm-up, it was time to get down to business.

It became clear early that this would be another incredibly close contest between two evenly matched teams. Rivers lost the opening two doubles sets but fought back strongly in the singles to keep the tie alive.

Trailing 4 sets to 3 heading into the final set, the girls threw absolutely everything they had into the contest, but unfortunately went down 5 sets to 3.

A special mention goes to Isabella and Abbie, our Number 3 and Number 4 players, who played their best tennis of the entire tournament. They controlled their natural urge to attack at all costs and instead played more measured, consistent tennis, winning their singles matches convincingly and giving us every chance of an overall victory.

A Fantastic Achievement

Finishing 8th in NSW from more than 400 NSW Public High Schools is a tremendous achievement and one the girls should be extremely proud of.

I would like to sincerely thank all of the parents and grandparents who travelled to Forster to support the girls throughout the tournament. Your encouragement from the sidelines was greatly appreciated.

A big thank you goes to Mr Condon (Rivers Sport Coordinator) for everything he did behind the scenes to make all of these matches and training sessions possible.

We have kept the same squad together for the past few years, but next season we'll need to recruit during the off-season to replace our veteran campaigner Lara as she graduates from Year 12.

Finally, I couldn't be prouder of the efforts of our four girls—DjiDji, Lara, Isabella and Abbie.

Girls, I hope your performances over the past few months have shown you that you are more than capable of competing with the very best schoolgirl tennis teams in NSW.

History continues! 💙⚽

For the first time in The Rivers Secondary College Open Girls Football history, the team has secured a place in the NSWCHS Final 8 after an outstanding 3-0 victory over Holsworthy High School in the Round of 16.

The girls created chance after chance in the opening half but were unlucky not to find the back of the net before the break. Their persistence paid off in the second half, with Amber producing a sensational hat-trick to seal a memorable victory.

Congratulations to Amber on her outstanding performance and to the entire squad on an exceptional team effort. Their determination, resilience and quality throughout the match have earned them a well-deserved place among the final eight schools in New South Wales.

A sincere thank you to Lismore City Council, North Coast School Sport Association, Italo Stars FC - Lismore, The Rivers Secondary College for their outstanding support and assistance in the lead-up to the match and throughout the organisation of the event. Your contribution has played a significant role in making this historic achievement possible.
