✨Child Friendly Excellence Awards 2026✨

This year we have welcomed Kirsty into Goodna - Smiths Road as our Centre Manager. From the moment Kirsty has arrived we have worked hard to uphold our expectations and strive for more as a team and for the children in our care and their families. As a team we are excited for what the rest of 2026 has to offer and continue to maintain strong connections with our families.

We would love any of our current or past families to share a nomination for us, we would greatly appreciate your time to do this.

Please use Goodna - Smiths Road Kids ELC as the centre name and add the [email protected] as the contact email.

As we welcome back the hot weather we are ready to play with our built in waterpark in our piazza. This is a draw card for so many of the children as they giggle, screech and share such elation as they explore water and all that it has to offer. In the warmer months this is an element of the centre that is continuously offered within our learning program.

Today our youngest of citizens had their water play morning.

If you are interested in exploring our centre further, feel free to contact us (3143 2949) to book a centre tour. You can also access our website to book a tour online - https://kidselc.com.au/ look for the purple 'Book a Tour' button in the top right corner.

✨Making Learning Visible✨

When we connected through community links for Bush Kindy we were inspired by the 8 Ways of Learning - Learning Maps. As we discuss the bandicoot which we find at our Bush Kindy site it prompted conversations around 'what could they look like?'

The children discussed the possibilities.

Long Nose
Furry
Warm like a Jumper
Spikes on their Back
Sharp Teeth.....
.....sharing their ideas not only verbally but through mark marking as well. We look forward to being able to investigate more about Bandicoots and their habits.

Reconciliation Action Plan - 2026 Review

As we reflect on where we have been in our cultural journey for 2025-2026 we are prompted to think deeper, harder and more intentionally around where we would like to go from here.

We would appreciate feedback from our families to shape our learning programs. We invite members of the wider community if there are any events on that we should know about to help us build our cultural responsiveness/local context.

We look forward to seeing where our questions could lead us in practice.
Thank you, Bec - Cultural Leader an the team at Goodna- Smiths Road.

Book Week 2026 - Symphony of Stories

This week we explored the world of literacy and how we go on an adventure through reading a book. We had team members dress up in costumes, children come in and share their thoughts and ideas around why they dressed in the costume that they did. Provocating items to invite children to wonder, be curious and be inspired through the written word is a valuable part of learning anytime of the year but especially special in moments like Book Week.

A few books we celebrated were -

The Good Dinosaur
Willbee the Bee
Possum Goes to School
The Hungry Bear
Millie and the Frame of Wonder

How were you inspired this Book Week to be creative?

As we explore the theme of 50 Years of Deadly for NAIDOC Week the children over all studios explored provocations to promote thoughtful thinking and centre projects were created. We were very lucky to have families and children create some designs for our deadly tile display along with creating rocks to add to our Rainbow Serpent in the carpark garden near the entrance of the centre. As we bring a focus to these events we thoughtfully embed cultural perspective within our program everyday.

The word for "humpy" in Yuggera language is "ngumbi". This term refers to a traditional temporary shelter.

Exploring the idea of indigenous architecture at Bush Kindy was an interesting conversation point today. It gave us the ability as a team to discuss ideas, trial ideas and then reflect and change our ideas to make the strongest humpy that we could. As Dante would say - "Team work makes the dream work."

We started this today as we found 4 large branches and then the children were encouraged to go on a scavenger hunt to find other branches to help make the structure stronger. As the children brought back sticks they held them where they felt they would best support our team construction. It was great to see the children's minds assessing their ideas and chatting with their friends to come up with ideas. Some of the children delighted in decorating the humpy with native flowers that they found from the trees close by.

We will continue to build on this over time as we visit Bush Kindy.

Is connecting to nature and the Land an element you value and would like your child to be a part of as they learn through their everyday?

Feel free to ring our centre (3143 2949) and enquire about bookings within our Kindergarten Program where Bush Kindy is an extra curricular program within this learning space. We would love to share our centre and kindergarten space with you. ✨

In the Reggio Emilia Approach, curious items and open-ended materials invite children (and adults) to wonder, investigate and create meaning through play. Natural objects, loose parts, recycled treasures and everyday resources can become powerful provocations, encouraging children to ask questions, test ideas, collaborate and express their thinking in many different ways.

Rather than offering one fixed purpose, these materials honour children as capable, creative learners who construct knowledge through exploration, imagination and relationship with their environment.

The children are mesmerized by the light table that is enriched with mirror blocks, mirror tiles, mini disco balls, transparent magnetic tiles and fibre optics to provide the children with some curious items that they may have no knowledge of but were conversation starters for family members and educators alike, reminiscing on their own childhoods.
