Year 10-12 students studying Spanish discover Latin food, culture and people in Adelaide

Year 10-12 students studying Spanish discovered food, cultures and people of the Spanish-speaking world in Adelaide C*D. Students tried a Uruguayan alfajor cookie at Opa Alfajores, a Colombian meal at Encanto Latin Cafe, and recognised (and some chose to buy and try) some snacks and drinks at The Latin Market on Pultney Street.

Students were provided opportunities to develop Languages learning dispositions such as Community-minded, Empathetic and Reflective.

Three of the students are heritage speakers of Spanish, with their families migrating from Mexico, Colombia and Argentina. The staff and their customers at the three venues we visited are from Uruguay, Argentina, Peru and Colombia. For our students that speak Spanish at home, this provided community connections. For our students that speak English or another language at home, this confirmed how learning Spanish is a skill and disposition for our multicultural community. Amongst our Year 10-12 Spanish classes we also have students with First Nations, Serbian, Filipino and Italian heritage.

On Wednesday 23 September, our Stage 2 Workplace Practices students took part in Mock Interviews as part of their assessment.

Students participated in job interviews aligned with their chosen career pathways, with industry mentors generously giving their time to provide valuable, real-world experience and feedback.

The event was also supported by our amazing Stage 2 Food & Hospitality students, who prepared and served a delicious morning tea to students and mentors — truly restaurant standard!

A fantastic collaboration between two subjects, providing students with meaningful, real-world learning opportunities.

On Monday 21st September, on International Day of Peace our school unveiled our very own Peace Pole. Unveiling our peace pole demonstrates a symbol of our commitment to creating a school community where peace, kindness, respect and inclusion are valued. The peace pole reminds us that peace isn’t simply the absence of conflict; it is something we actively create through the way we speak, listen and treat others.

Our ceremony welcomed guests, Chad and Derek from Rotary Club Modbury Golden Grove who kindly donated our first peace pole.

The peace pole program had its beginnings after the second world war in 1955. Now more than 250,000 peace poles stand in approximately 200 countries around the globe, symbolising the common wish for a world at peace.

Thank you to our 3 student leaders for being MC’s, our 4 students who planted a native plant as a beautiful addition to our commitment to peace.

Our peace pole is now part of our school. But the real work of creating peace doesn’t belong to the pole – it belongs to us. Every day we have opportunities to choose kindness over conflict, inclusion over exclusion and understanding over judgement. May this peace pole remind us of the community we want to be.

We are so proud of the amazing student work featured in The In-Between exhibition at Gallery 1855!

With over 40 Golden Grove High School students involved, the exhibition showcases a stunning range of photography, digital art, abstract painting and mixed media from students across Years 7–12. The launch night on Thursday 17 September had a wonderful turnout and was a fantastic celebration of student creativity.

The exhibition is still on during the school holidays and is well worth a visit!
