Surgical Interest Association - Surgia

Surgia’s vision is to create and inspire the surgical leaders of tomorrow. Each year, Surgia holds at least 40 in person or online events for its members.

The Surgical Interest Association (Surgia) is a not-for-profit, student-run society based at Griffith University on the Gold Coast, currently in its 11th year of establishment. Surgia serves as a nexus, uniting surgically inclined medical students, junior doctors, and senior consultants from the Gold Coast and its surrounding regions. The Gold Coast, renowned as one of the most rapidly growing health regions in the country, houses prominent institutions such as the Gold Coast University Hospital, Gold Coast Private Hospital, and cutting-edge medical teaching facilities at Griffith University. This environment offers a unique learning opportunity that Surgia is keen to leverage for the benefit of its members. Since its inception in 2012, Surgia has grown exponentially, boasting over 4000 lifelong student members and over 80 professional members and alumni actively engaged in the organisation. Aligned with its commitment to enhancing students’ interest in surgery, teaching surgical skills, and inspiring future surgeons, Surgia has forged strategic partnerships with the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (RACS) and the Australasian Students' Surgical Association (ASSA). In 2024, Surgia aims to expand its presence in the Sunshine Coast, and develop even more practical workshops for its students at both campuses. 🩺 SPECIALTY SKILLS SYMPOSIUM: PART 2 🩺

We are back in the anatomy labs for another huge night of hands-on surgical learning.

This time, you will rotate through two specialised surgical stations:
🔹 Cholecystectomy
Step into general surgery and explore the principles of gallbladder removal, surgical anatomy, and safe operative technique.

🔹 Achilles Tendon Repair
Put your suturing skills to the test as you learn the principles of tendon handling, repair, and restoration in orthopaedic surgery.

Guided by experienced surgical demonstrators, this is your opportunity to handle instruments, practise practical techniques, ask questions, and experience procedures you will not usually encounter until much later in your medical training.

Get your tickets now to our most unique Specialty Skills Workshop happening this Wednesday, 9 September, from 6:00–8:30 pm in the Level 10 G40 Anatomy Labs.

This is not your usual suturing workshop. For the first time, you’ll step into two highly specialised areas of surgery and work through procedures that most medical students will not get the opportunity to experience until well after graduation:

👁️ Ophthalmology: Take on a full pterygium excision surgery simulation and explore the precision of microsurgical technique.
🩷 Breast Surgery: Practise a breast cyst excision and mammoplasty, developing hands-on confidence with surgical instruments, tissue handling, and reconstruction principles.

You’ll also have the chance to learn directly from surgical directors and consultant specialists from GCUH, ask the questions you have always wanted to ask, and build practical skills in a supportive, engaging environment.

If you are interested in surgery, curious about specialty training, or simply want an experience that goes far beyond the standard medical-school curriculum, this is one event you do not want to miss. 🎉
