Guided by Miami State High School's Junior and Middle School Leaders and an impassioned artist's (Mike Van Dam) vision, a Pelican steel sculpture has emerged.
Inspired by a deep commitment to address plastic waste within the school community, the unveiling of the Pelican sculpture has introduced a functional emblem of sustainable practice. The Pelican invites a shared commitment to responsible waste disposal. Its open beak serves as a receptacle for recycled bottles, a tangible reminder that every small choice made within the school contributes to a larger narrative of environmental stewardship.

Last week eight year 11 students represented Miami SHS at the Bond University High School Model United Nations (BUHMUN) event at Bond University over two days. Our students were assigned either as delegates for Uganda or Argentina, or as journalists reporting on the meeting. Over two days 230 students from various Queensland schools replicate the workings of the United Nations. This year delegates put forward resolutions on the best ways of reducing inequality and the effects of climate change. Miami student Will Bailey won ‘Best Article’ award in the journalism category. Well done Will! Thank you Bond University for connecting our students with other potential future leaders.

Our Year 8 IDEAS Students have been exploring 3D Modelling and 3D printing. They have been actively engaged in mastering a design thinking process, involving divergent and convergent thinking. Students begin by mind mapping a central theme or topic, then branching out to develop relevant ideas and concepts using divergent thinking. Subsequently they employ convergent thinking to refine these ideas into ideated sketches focussing on key and relevant points to formulate a solution. Once a range of low-fidelity ideation sketches has been developed, students transition into the 3D modelling phase of the design process, where they create, produce, and test their designs. The level of skill and knowledge students are displaying is inspiring, we look forward to seeing their designs.

Today, our entire school assembly focused on celebrating success and the diversity among everyone.

We celebrated the achievements of students in the Duke of Edinburgh and Science awards. Meanwhile, Mr Wilkinson and Mrs Hemphill recognized the nominees for the Gold Coast Principal Alliance's Excellence Awards. Todd Campbell, Lee Freeman, and Scott Archibald provided insight into exceeding expectations in their respective fields.

Building on these motivating speeches, Mr Sullivan congratulated all our future Cross Country representatives for the upcoming carnival, who will represent Miami State High School across the region. Special recognition was given to Abbi O'Shea, who recently finished 3rd in the 3000m steeplechase in Australia, representing Queensland.

Subsequently, Mrs Murray led a celebration highlighting the uniqueness of every brain during Autism Awareness Week. Alongside Mrs Handles, we shared various perspectives on living with someone who may have autism and discussed ways we can offer support.

It was an inspiring assembly where many came together to celebrate our differences and significant accomplishments!
