Watercolours out, teapots poured, sketchbooks open across the table.

lines.sketching spent their Saturday morning with us, pencils and paint tracing the awnings, the ironwork, the light through the leadlight windows.

Cups of tea went cold beside half-finished washes of ochre and blue while our thirty-year-old café found its way onto paper, table by table.

Good company, quiet concentration, and a handful of new sketches of Poets.

Budds Beach is a Gold Coast neighbourhood where children swing on tyres hanging from front yard branches, and play hidey in low branches to jump down on leaf-covered beaches, yogis and dancers softly tread across strewn leaves and families and friends gather to share food and fellowship under shady boughs. 💚🍃

One of the loveliest aspects of sketching our local neighbourhoods are the memories brought forth by the slow connection of pen and paper, quiet conversations and gentle laughs. One of our classmates today told of their son’s favourite climbing spot - a tangle of trunks across the road from Bumbles Cafe . Another lovely morning. 💚🍃

The two classes that I taught this week on the Gold Coast were both about buildings & perspective - Flat Perspective and Eye-line Perspective.

Flat Perspective is all about taking out the angles, simplifying the shapes, looking at your subject straight on and taking the time to add in lots of character to our scene.

For my smaller group on Monday, we decided to tackle an Art Deco style building with rounded balconies. What a challenge! My lovely students were determined to crack the code of understanding the rules of Eye Line Perspective and what a fabulous job they did in getting the angles right. Then with some layers of bright watercolor we created a distinct “Miami Vice” feel. Very 1980’s 🤣
