Wander through the 4,000 year old city of Mdina on the same streets that Norman, Sicilian & Spanish nobility have walked.

Sip Maltese w**e at sunset as we watch the yachts bob in Vallettas Grand Harbour and see the city streets slowly melt into a deep gold colour.

Gaze at Caravaggios masterpiece in the Baroque St John’s Co-Cathedral then ferry across to Gozo for 3 nights to be transported back in time with its quiet towns & pristine Mediterranean beaches.

Come and capture the golden light of Malta in your sketchbook in May 2027.

Our final class for the Southern Gold Coast sketching group was today, and of course it’s all about People.

We start by looking at shapes, and the length of limbs, where the joints are and how to sketch the suggestion of a face without going into too much detail. Sketching fast and with a loose grip on the pen gives our sketches energy and authenticity. The less “serious “ we are about it, the better our sketch is 😁
The blind contour portraits always gets a laugh as does the fast portraits of each other. 🤣🤪 (I didn’t know my hair looked like that? 🤣)

Our final sketch for the day was a young couple having a coffee with their brand new baby. We decided that this might be their first outing as a family so this became our theme. With a bit of watercolor thrown on, our scene was complete. What a lovely memory we’ve created of our morning together in Paddock Bakery and what lovely friendships we’ve made from this group of sketchers.

Lesson 5 of our Bumbles Cafe neighbourhood sketch class, learning beginner Erin Hill Sketching techniques and it’s a chance to briefly look back on how far we’ve come already. How differently we now see our world! 💕

From simple shapes and colours, flower arrangements, trees, buildings and more complex scenes, we’ve been gradually adding to our little box of sketching tricks, one simple step at a time. 💕

So proud of my ladies, and loving hanging out together. Today we even sampled Kate’s Cherry tart, 🍒fresh from the oven! Delicious 😋! A special hat also made an appearance. 😉🥰

Julie & I are taking bookings for the last Urban Sketching Classes for 2026.

Learn how to sketch the yachts on the Broadwater or Main Beach, sketch local buildings & people in cafes. We use watercolor & pen to create fast, colorful scenes and we specialize in teaching absolute beginners how to sketch and take up this fun new hobby.

Lesson 4 of our Erin Hill Sketchers course and we took 15 steps from Bumbles Cafe to sit and sketch the scenic Nerang River beachside. 🩵

First we mapped out a thumbnail plan using a rough version of the rule of thirds. Kiddliewinks didn’t stay long enough in front of us (and we weren’t about to whip out our phones and take pictures 😬💕) so we took some creative liberties and sketched a little imagined sand-sculptor using basic shapes. 🤗. Once we’d completed the ‘big’ foreground shapes, we gradually worked towards the background filling in details that added charm.

Moving indoors to add colour, we stopped for a yummy sausage roll taste test (the apple was a delicious twist 😋 - who knew???) and finished with some pencils, extra line work, and Posca pops ✨. A very cute record of another lovely morning. 💕

P.S. Had to include the cheeky chippie photo 🤭. Kate tells us that anyone who works in hospitality is “75%chips”. We did our bit for the cause today 👍😋😂.
